Re: Olympics!!!!!!
Massive crime, massive corruption scandal, including the president being impeached, massive construction delays & cost overruns, along with shoddy construction, things not being ready, the economy is on the verge of collapse, and all of this doesn't even include Zika. They should have moved the games while they still had a chance. What a fokking disaster in having these Olympics in Rio..

Brazil, one of the top 10 economies in the world, is a "poor country"?GannonFan wrote:This is what happens when the Olympics, certainly over the course of time, makes it a habit to rob these poor countries blind by letting them host the Olympics. It's been a pattern since at least Montreal in 1976 that whenever a poorer country holds these games that much of the rapid building they have to do just to host these games ends up being left idle for decades afterwards. It's a sin that they still get poor countries lined up to spend gobs of money building things they don't really need. If they get one Olympics cancelled entirely maybe that will make them think twice about this idea of robbing these poorer countries blind.
Honestly, I can buy what you're saying when you're talking about a country with a government that's less democratic with limited accountability and checks and balances, but Brazil isn't a tin pot country by any stretch of the imagination.

And yet almost 25% of Brazil's population lives in poverty. The city where they choose to have the Olympics has about 800,000 homeless families, and the Olympics have made it worse by reducing the amount of housing and increasing the prices of the remaining houses. And of course, the favelas. London it ain't.Pwns wrote:Brazil, one of the top 10 economies in the world, is a "poor country"?GannonFan wrote:This is what happens when the Olympics, certainly over the course of time, makes it a habit to rob these poor countries blind by letting them host the Olympics. Re: Olympics!!!!!!
MrsCCU was lamenting this fact last night. It's truly a shame what the IOC and FIFA do to these countries. Either let the countries that can afford the facilities (like US, UK, Germany, etc..) and rotate the games or don't have them at all in this current incarnation. At some point, it's unsustainable.GannonFan wrote:And yet almost 25% of Brazil's population lives in poverty. The World Bank's numbers cited on Wikipedia have the poverty rate in single digits.

Yeah, I saw it was close to 25% back in 2003, according to the World Bank.Pwns wrote:Where do you get the number from?GannonFan wrote:

Are these percentages relative to others within their respective country, or is there some global/international metric they are using?*

I'm glad all that money being embezzled....I mean funneled into Rio is fulfilling its purpose: remind the world what a cesspool that place is and how corrupt and inept both the IOC and the Brazilian government is.GannonFan wrote:Now super-resistant bacteria in the water. Awesome.

Re: Olympics!!!!!!
I've noticed something. People with huge salaries in big-name professional sports are bailing on Rio like the plague, while the hard-scrabble athletes in sports that don't pay much are fighting as hard as ever to get there.
Stupid elitists....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Really should change that to people who play sports where the Olympics are not the pinnacle of the sport are bailing while people who play sports where the Olympics are the most important are fighting as hard as ever to get there.SuperHornet wrote:I've noticed something. The US Open was June 16-19, The British Open is July 14-17, the PGA Championship is July 28-31, Olympics Golf is supposed to be August 11-14 and then the FedEx Cup starts on August 25 for 1 month with Ryder Cup being the week following the end of the FedEx Cup starting September 30. If you want to take some time off and be sharp (that is a lot of travel back and forth with all of that in July/August), it is going to be the Olympics. Golf should have never been added to the Olympics(same with tennis)

What professional athlete who has made a good living wouldn't want to go to a country with zika to make money for the wonderful and munificent International Olympic Committee?
