A great example of Bilichick is Dean Pees
Pees was a coach for years bouncing around - then he spends 5 years with the Patriots
Learns their defensive system and is still running it today
and he handed it - on a silver platter - to the Baltimore Ravens 8 years ago
and Harbaugh still runs that defensive system to this day
and now Pees is in Tennessee
and they have adopted the Bilichick defensive system
and pees showed that same system to Matt leFleur
now LeFleaur in Green bay runs that defensive system this year
Check the Titans / Ravens / and Green Bay defenses
as well as the Patriots defense
what do they all have in common ?
So he's spun off one successful assistant coach? How many successful head coaches?
How does the Belichek tree compare to Bill Walsh's?
Well firstly he's spun off several successful "assistants" all over the league
You'll want to check that list it is very long
But no doubt about it...
Being a head coach requires skillz in probably a dozen more areas
and Bill doesn't let anybody know what he does
He has them manage their very small task - and he manages the rest
I'm sure he's a dick to work with
Oh... what about the Pete Carroll coaching tree...

Andy Reid isn't as good of a coach but he's a better mentor than Belichek. Questions to consider:
If your team was in the market for a new head coach, who would be a better candidate? Josh McDaniel or Eric Bieniemy?
If your kid was going into coaching who would you rather he worked for?
You might want to read up on Andy Reid's sons. One OD'ed on smack at Eagles training camp. One rammed am old lady on the street and took off while the other got in a road rage incident and pulled a gun on some guy. Both were high as a kite and were major druggies.
He knows how to raise kids!
Being a good father is not the same as being a good mentor.

I disagree, but hey, you can make your own rules when raising a family.

A good father is likely a good mentor but a good mentor isn't always a good father.
I try to be both. If one of my kids had an opportunity to work for Reid or Belichek, my initial reaction would be to recommend Reid but I would tell them to look into them closely.

During the '70s, people wondered that quite often about Tom Landry, quite possibly the best coach in NFL history, having only Dick Nolan as a "disciple-turned-head coach" at SF and then NO. It wasn't until later that guys like Dan Reeves and Danny White became head coaches (though in White's case, it was in the Arena League, founding the Arizona Rattlers and then the Utah Blaze; just like Landry, White got the royal screw job from ownership in Arizona, leading to his founding of the Blaze). There have probably been a few more since then, but it was falsely chalked up to the perception that "The Great Stone Face" didn't delegate authority well. That in and of itself is bogus, because he DID have a player-coach on his staff (Reeves), just as he himself was a player-coach (actually DC at age 29) with the NY Giants. A HC with power-control issues likely wouldn't trust a player to simultaneously serve as an assistant coach. (Actually, if I were Belichick, I would consider naming Brady player-coach in charge of QBs, and within a couple of years widen his scope to OC, to prepare him for life after playing. Even if Brady were to break George Blanda's longevity record, he's still going to have to do SOMETHING after. Forty-eight or forty-nine is WAY too young to just do NOTHING all day, and he's too competitive for that, anyway....)
Dude... seriously
Tom Landry might not even be in the top ten in the history of NFL coaches
Nobody in their right mind suggests that Tom Landry is quite possibly be the best coach in NFL history
Hell they replaced him with a guy that almost immediately had more success
Same number of Super Bowl wins. Also Landry led the Cowboys to 20+ consecutive winning seasons.

The Cowboys are loaded with physical talent
Even Rex Ryan could get wins when he had a GM that drafted talent
Jason Garrett has no excuse
Jerrah took a (poorly) calculated gamble by announcing pre-game that Garrett would not be fired before the end of the season.
Oops.
You know he's kicking himself now. He wants to (and rightfully should) fire him today.

Physical talent is overrated at many levels. Portland State and JSU have great recruiting classes, tons of FBS transfers and......?
Jamarcus Russell was a freak. Jeff George has the strongest arm ever. The Raiders and Cowboys histories are riddled with massive road graters at oline.
I’ll take coaching, scheme, team continuity, and player IQ.

I don't disagree...
But Pete Carroll regularly builds teams around physical talent
The Seahawks draft on physical talent alone
and have admitted as much - you have to coach to your roster and GM tendencies

Of course but I think they, like the Patriots and Steelers, have created a culture of accountability and brotherhood that makes that easier. It’s the old Nordstrom’s “hire the smile” philosophy. The belief in the franchise’s ability (system) to create winners enables them to take chances on character.

Funny to think about Andy Reid mentoring and coaching NFL players to have character and accountability, basically do not be like his sons.

I think Andy is so absorbed by the NFL that he abdicated the fathering of his sons to his wife. And his wife was probably a coddling enabler.
So you've based the "biggest surprise" in the NFL entirely on preseason Superbowl odds..?
It seems like maybe there should be additional factors - but - okay

How a team loaded with talent like Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, Travis Frederick, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Robert Quinn can have a losing record on Christmas Day and possibly miss the playoffs.
I'm not gloating about the Eagles win. It's seriously befuddling how the Cowboys aren't an 11+ win team.

The Cowboys dominated the top 100 active players list
They are loaded
Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch and Sean Lee are close to a top 5 linebacker crew in the NFL also
