Re: Western State vs. Montana 9/5 1:00
Someone tell me again, what is the difference between playing a team like Western and playing Carroll College? Are the Griz scared of the NAIA national champs?
I would think a game against Carroll would still be an easy victory for the Griz and would generate more interest in Montana than a game against this Western State team.
You want an easy game, fine. But at least give the casual fan some reason to watch it. And scheduling your little brothers from Montana's capitol city to play the premier football program in the state would add some interest...at least for the start of the game. You still would/should get the same outcome.

And don't give the tired, cliched lie of "you don't have the balls to schedule FBS teams" because nobody ever schedules FBS teams for that reason anyway. It's all about money. Montana doesn't need the body bag games anymore, so they don't schedule them. Teams like, say, Northern Colorado that bleed money by averaging a paltry 4300 fans per game are the ones that need to whore themselves out to any even vaguely higher level squad desperate to fill their schedule.
You may see the Griz play an FBS again in the near future, but I'm guessing the paycheck would need to be at least $700,000. How many FBS teams would pay that when they could get a much more automatic FCS win for a fraction of the cost?

No but seriously...I assume it's because of the elevation? Or is it because of the women-beasts they suit up?

Dead on and has been said so many times on these boards that you would think it would sink in but it does not. You have to admit that it is funny to read the uninformed comments occasionally from the fans of teams that like to act like playing the FBS teams is their dick measuring tool when they have such a tiny pud in their own division.Mvemjsunpx wrote:And your point is?TarpleyNCBears wrote:Glad to see the Griz stepping up to face the big boys. Playing the bottom of DII (Western St.) is equivalent to Weber playing Western MT (NAIA).

As expressed by phx and Ursus, the explanation is clear. However, I'm going to cut you a break because:TarpleyNCBears wrote:Glad to see the Griz stepping up to face the big boys. Let me guess Montana is the only Big Sky team that isn't playing a Bowl Championship team this season.
a) you're new to the board
b) you're a UNC fan, which automatically makes us question your intelligence anyway.

Welcome Tarpley!! Good to see another UNC poster here.
Don't mind the Griz posters - they think they are too good to be in the Big Sky, and are awaiting the Pac-10 invite any day

I don't think its a cliched lie, I think its the truth, Montana is afraid of getting throttled like they did in the past. What's cliche is the excuse you use, "oh we don't need body bag games like that", that's fine if you don't but Western State? I've never followed their program extensively but from what I know they've never been good at football. They're known for cross country, and maybe wrestling. Honestly UNC would probably never think of drawing as many fans as Montana would, thats because there's 3 other FBS programs in the state as well as 6 D2 programs. Having a 3-31 record for the past few years doesn't help, so we have to make money anyway we can, even if you call it "whoring ourselves out".Mvemjsunpx wrote:And your point is?TarpleyNCBears wrote:Glad to see the Griz stepping up to face the big boys. That makes sense and if you go ahead and apply the same logic to Montana as you do to the schools that aren't in our position to make money at home then you would actually have a valid point. We have taken down more FBS teams than No Col. We beat Oregon State the last time we played them but we got the usual ass whooping The last time we played Oregon and Iowa a few years ago that everybody in FCS gets when they play GOOD FBS schools save the occasional App. St. or Citadel victory over a big boy. When we play the lower level FBS teams we do much better. The time before last when we were at Oregon we lost by four to them and ran out of time down on their 15 yd. line. Nobody is afraid of anything and I couldn't give a shit if ANYBODY in the BSC or anywhere else wants to think that. Fact is most of our opponents take a worse beating when they come to our house than they did in their FBS matchups and those that did win an FBS mathchup that they were forced into due to their poor fan support at home games still take a whoopin' when they get their shot at us later in the year. If it helps you then go ahead and put yourself on a level that makes you feel good but as I said in a previous post if you want to get into a dick measuring contest then try showing up with more than an angry inch when the time comes to lay it out on the table.NorthernCOU wrote:I don't think its a cliched lie, I think its the truth, Montana is afraid of getting throttled like they did in the past. Aren't you paying Western to come up there? I'm sure they're just going up to because they want too. lol Like I said if you don't need the FBS game then fine, but at least schedule quality opponent, you might as well scheduled CSU pueblo who just brought back their football program last year. The only reason why I said something is because all I ever hear from montana fans is how there no competition in the big sky and blah blah this and that. Yet you put Western on your sched Why you throwing in a dick measuring contest? You homo brah?? I'm just saying we do what we have to do to bring in money, we're not fortunate enough to be the only show in town.

Re: Western State vs. Montana 9/5 1:00
We're paying Western Colorado to come to Montana and giving them a chance at some cash...so what? I imagine they get about 50-70k to come here and the Athletic Dpt. clears about a 1/2 million. Seems like a pretty good payday for playing a lack luster team and hence the reason that most FBS teams can't afford us. We ain't a cheap date like NoCol is so they use you guys as their Western Colorado. You can bet your bottom dollar that fans on FBS boards that are playing schools like NoCol are saying EXACTLY what you are saying about us in reference to them.NorthernCOU wrote:No Col?? Whats that? I never said a thing about being happy that we have Western Colorado on our schedule. I don't think I've ever seen or heard a fan being happy about those games either. Fact of the matter is that UM does what it does for the money just like the other schools do. I don't know for sure why it had to be W. Colorado but I remember it being something to do with fitting in Cal Poly and UC Davis. We play a lot of quality opponents every year and I've never said anything about the quality of the BSC teams and I don't remember seeing that by other Griz fans on here either so please point out what the fuck you are talking about.
NoCol is somewhat of an embarrassment so far in the BSC but hopefully they are getting better.
You didn't capitalize Montana which is funny due to your NoCol comment.
Throwing in dick measuring is what is know as an analogy. You see some fans like to say they're playing an FBS opponent and we aren't and that makes them real macho. You know it's like when you see someone more successful than you and then you say to your buddy..."Dudes a homo". It helps you feel manly. Good for you.
Two things here:You homo brah??
1. No I'm not gay but I will consider all offers. Save up some money and we'll talk later.
2. Brah?? My advice for this would be that you stop watching Dog the Bounty Hunter Brah.

Wow, impressive! Although the last time Montana played Oregon State, everyone beat up on the Beavers (1996). And your reference to the Oregon game sounds pretty similar to when Dickenson was QB (Ducks have not been all that great until recently either). Everyone in the Big Sky does have what could be called an "easy" opponent (some more easier than others) this year. Griz did step up this year scheduling both Cal Poly and UC-Davis. Not too many teams the Griz are scared, but it still makes me wonder why schedule an easy opponent (and give them the money) when there is a team just as worthy (and more intriguing of a matchup) just down the road in Helena. Should still be the same outcome, shouldn't it?Ursus A. I don't think there's as much demand for UM playing Carroll as you think there is. However inaccurate, the NAIA has a stigma of being basically high school ball or at least sub-NCAA (it's really somewhere between DII & DIII in terms of ability). I'm guessing just as many Griz fans would bitch about Carroll on the schedule as Western State. And what do you mean by "and give them the money"? UM would have to give a paycheck to Carroll, too.JALMOND wrote:

It's not like the Griz would make more money off a Carroll game than Western State, since they'll fill the stadium regardless.
