I guess my main question is that, as perhaps the most respected Democratic Senator of his generation, how was Ted Kennedy never elected President Pro Tem of the Senate? Did he just not want the position? He wielded lots of influence on both sides of the aisle as it was, but he could have done so much more from that position, IMO.
While the position of Senate Pro Tem is elected by fellow Senators, it is almost always given to the most senior member of the majority, in the Democrats case Robert Byrd has always had seniority over Kennedy having been elected in 1958 compared to Kennedy's 1962.

Although technically the equal of the Speaker of the House, the Senate Pro holds little power compared to the House Speaker which is why its a position generally given to the majority's most senior member as opposed to a powerful member.

Either that or the donks realized if they gave that position to a drunk, a murderer and a philanderer they'd lose what little credibility they had left.

I truely take offense to that comment...

99.9999% of the humans I have known over my many years of life did not drive drunk into the water and leave their companion there to die....and then lie for life to cover up their evil... :coffee:

If there is a heaven and Ted Kennedy is in it, then I think I will have to rethink my lifes strategy because apparently good and bad have been redefined.
