Plans detail Buzzard Point soccer stadium for D.C. United
Image

Construction of a soccer stadium for D.C. United on Buzzard Point in Southwest Washington would require assembling properties from five owners, including the District, according to development plans obtained by Capital Business.

The 20-page concept plans, dated July 2010, propose a “Sports & Entertainment District @ Buzzard Point” stretching from Nationals Park to a new D.C. United stadium. The soccer stadium would be bordered by T Street to the south, 2nd Street to the west, Half Street to the east and Potomac Avenue and R Street to the north.

White House Easter Egg Roll has MLS flavor in 2012
Image

WASHINGTON – MLS players and employees spend thousands of hours each year serving their communities and spreading the joy of their sport to young fans.

But they don’t often get the chance to do so on the famous South Lawn of the White House.

On Monday, eight of the league’s players and one coach helped thousands of children play some footie as part of the 134th Annual White House Easter Egg Roll and its “Let's Go, Let's Play, Let's Move” theme. They were there along with nearly 35,000 other guests, adding a bevy of activities and entertainment to one of Washington’s most beloved traditions, hosted by the President and the First Family.

“Any time there’s something that’s emailed to you with ‘White House’ in the title, it’ll give you a double-take,” said Philadelphia Union defender Danny Califf. “To be able to do this – and take my family along – is probably one of the coolest experiences that I’ve had. I’m honored.”

Califf and Philly teammates Brian Carroll and Zac MacMath were the first MLS representatives on the South Lawn, followed by Kenny Cooper and Stephen Keel of the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United’s Stephen King, Robbie Russell, Chris Pontius and head coach Ben Olsen.

Could the fourth time be the charm for the LA Galaxy?

The defending MLS Cup champions will have their fourth crack at the recently crowned La Liga champs Real Madrid when they host the galacticos in a World Football Challenge match on Thurs., Aug. 2 (10:30 pm ET) at The Home Depot Center.

The HDC was the stage for their first-ever meeting back in 2005 when current Galaxy star David Beckham wore Real Madrid's colors in a 2-0 win for the Spanish giants.

The two clubs have also played at the Rose Bowl in 2010 (Real Madrid won 3-2) and at the LA Coliseum last summer (Real Madrid won 4-1) in Southern California.

MLS announces new Caribbean Player Combine, to be held in Antigua in January
Image

The search for the next Shalrie Joseph begins ... now.

On Thursday, at a press conference in Antigua, MLS announced a new partnership with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) to host a Caribbean Player Combine January 2-5 in St. John's, Antigua. The top players at the event, to be held at Antigua Recreation Grounds, will earn an invitation to the adidas MLS Player Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., held later in January.

“We recognize that the CONCACAF area, and particularly the Caribbean, is rich with soccer talent,” MLS executive vice president Todd Durbin said in a statement released by the league. "This will be an opportunity for our scouts to evaluate and identify the region’s top players."

NBA star LeBron James says he's spoken to David Beckham over stake in potential Miami MLS team

Could LeBron James be teaming up with David Beckham on an MLS team in Miami?

Although the two have previously discussed soccer in Miami, the Miami Heat superstar revealed on Monday that a stake in an MLS team for James has also been broached.

"There's some interest on both sides," James told media in Miami. "David has become a good friend of mine over the last few years. I think it would be great for this city to have a football club for sure. There's interest on both sides but it's preliminary talks.

"The research is still being made out," he continued. "I think it could be huge. You never know. I think this is a great town for soccer. There's a lot of soccer players, there's great youth soccer players here and people love the city as well. That definitely would help."

Worst kept secret in the US soccer world  :notworthy:

Orlando City is doing everything right, and should be the benchmark on how to properly form a professional soccer franchise in the States. Instead of starting from nothing, they've built up their fanbase and solidified their standing. Well supported, with sponsors and investors coming on board. MLS (and the NASL as well) should look at having a system in place through US Soccer for growing new potential franchises.

This still going on? MLS has a habit of making their playoffs feel like the offseason.
