Well, i do not consider health care a right. If I had my way there would never have been an effort to try to guarantee health care just like if I had my way there would never have been an effort to try to guarantee things like enough to eat or housing.

Label me as you wish. But whatever I am I have historically voted for what most would consider to be the more conservative of the two major party candidates in Presidential elections. Reagan twice. Bush the Elder. Dole. Bush the Younger twice. McCain. Romney.

I had, until 2016, also always voted for the Republican in every US House Race, every US Senate Race, every State House Race, and every State Senate Race. Every Louisiana Gubernatorial race.

But what's been going on with the Republican Party and/or the conservative movement over the past two years is just beyond the pale. Yes, I know they've been dishonest in the past. But it's just gotten totally out of hand now.

And it's extremely disappointing.
You may not consider it a right, but outside of what are considered to be the "natural rights" of The Enlightenment, a "right" is whatever a society decides it is.

Access to a free and appropriate public education is not what would be considered a natural right, but it has long been considered a right by Americans. It is because we say it is. If we say health coverage is a right, then it will be so.

I don't know? Should I protest because 90% of the NBA is black and isn't "indicative of our society"? :tothehand: :tothehand:

And I couldn't care less WHO is on that list. As long as they get it right.

WTF??? The only thing I'm concerned with is that the results match MY desire in a legal and fair fashion. You could put 3 monkeys, a giraffe, and an octopus in there. I don't care as long as they vote according to what I want to see. And I will continue to cast my votes in accordance with what I want to see happen. I'm pretty sure that's the bottom line in this process.

I didn't miss the message. You made a horrible analogy. Equating the NBA to Congress....

I know those men represent a diverse population, but we know Republicans(and Democrats) don't do a damn thing to represent the people that aren't in their party. Contrary to what they say.

Well, when you laugh at and dismiss the American electorate then I'm not sure what you think the next steps should be in terms of fixing what you think the problems are. Are you suggesting we take away the vote and have some types of committees pick the representation in government? Sure, I'd agree with you that the American electorate, taken as a whole, is pretty dim-witted, but what other way of governing are you proposing that doesn't involve that electorate? :coffee:

But, you're insinuating that voters play some role in crafting this legislation.

Trump said he would not cut Medicaid/Medicare, he would cover everyone, and that he wouldn't take away perexisting conditions. This plan doesn't do that - and, the Senate plan won't do it all either.

Yeah, Obama's healthcare plan that he ran on was very different from what ended up being passed. I'm not disputing that.

The point is - these things are written by committees. Saying 'voters' have a role in crafting legislation is asinine.

I'd much rather have diversity of class and professional background and diversity of expertise and world-views than have just diversity of appearance. Using the latter as a proxy for the former just seems to go against the principle of not judging individuals by group characteristics.

But that's just my bigoted, white-male-privileged opinion I guess.

You can't swing a dead cat down here without finding a local microbrew. But failing that, I try and find a Guinness, Sam Adams or an amber. Drink lots of Shiner & Zeigenbock.
