I think most Spider fans gave up on him based on his outright disrespect for Eric Ward as a QB. That and poorly written articles that always had facts wrong.
One of our posters had emailed him during last season asking why Ward wasn't getting any consideration for the Payton. He posted Coulson's response on SpiderNation which basically said that he didn't think Ward was a good enough player and his stats weren't good enough to warrant consideration. Coulson sent him another email threatening legal action if the post wasn't taken down immediately - I guess he didn't think his reasons were convincing enough to be listed publicly.

I will throw my two cents in here. I think everyone, including Coulson has good points here. In a court of law you can not submit a recording without letting someone know you are recording them and I think perhaps in the email case that had you asked Coulson permission to use his email then you would have been fine. Even if you had just posted that you emailed him and he did not think he was good enough and would not add him, then I don't think he would have had a problem with you putting that in public. I think perhaps he just felt his rights had been violated in a way that you posted a private email for public use without his permission.
Now, in the case of Ward I think perhaps it would have been good to see his name on the list but I know that most in the CAA thought he would be the OFF POY and he was not. That was a big case they were making for adding him, from what I was told, and I really think that the Villanova WR was the biggest Payton snub. I have seen Ward in person and on tape several times and I will say from a NFL standpoint he just does not have the ability to be a QB but he was a solid college player. Another player in the league that I think got a bigger snub than Ward was that Pat Devlin did not even make the CAA postseason lists.
There is one big thing I am going to miss from Coulson that I don't think the new writer will ever do and that is his willingness to put a dominant offensive lineman on the list. I have voted a lineman in my top 5 for the Payton before and I really believe coming in to next year that there is one out there who deserves mention. Coulson would have put this kid on there as well, especially with the success of Villanova's team. I am sure most of you know who I am talking about on Villanova (Ijalana).
Vlad Ducasse is one that I probably would have put on the list if I had the power to do so but I know Coulson could not make a strong argument for him with the fact that his offense was bad. If a lineman is going to be on the list I think he needs to be someone who is a big name, plays on a good team, has strong NFL stock, is a returning All-American (preferably consensus), and someone who has been 1st team all-league for at least two years going in to their senior year. Some might say that McCracken fits that bill but his NFL stock is not extremely high like Ducasse and even Ijalana's are. If a lineman is so dominant that he is going to make that list it just looks better if they have strong NFL stock whereas that is not really important for a QB, RB, or WR. It just makes the argument more compelling. I know when I had the ear of the Outland and Nagurski people this year that they told me for a FCS player to make the list he needed to be a big name, a returning 1st team All-American, have high NFL stock, etc. and I think for a lineman to break that barrier for the Payton list it would help the argument if he has all of that.

In that case you could argue that Edwards, Nichols, Karim, and Hudgins should have been the only ones on the list.Skjellyfetti wrote:So you admit he had no business winning it? Why should he be on the watchlist if he doesn't have a case to win it?ur2K wrote:

One misconception is that Coulson not honestly change the votes and Edwards truly did earn the Payton for a second time. He is the best player I have ever seen in FCS on the offensive side of the ball, with Adrian Peterson, Steve McNair, and Brian Westbrook all right there with him. It was fitting that Edwards won the award for a second time. Future players should celebrate Edwards breaking down the barriers he did because now it opens up the door for the next player who gets compared in terms of talent and numbers to him has a stronger shot at breaking those same barriers again.

That is very true. I do agree with that. I just try to look at both sides and posting someone's email without permission is a pet peave for some and probably is for Dave thus he reacted like he did.ur2K wrote:While I agree with most of that, a simple request to remove the email would've sufficed. Depends on which state you live in SCFBF. In NY only one party to the discussion needs to know they are being recorded. So if you call someone and record it, you satisfy that requirement yourself.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:

I'm not so sure the law would extend to emails anyway. I think it may be more of an etiqutte issue than anything.

Danefan is correct. In addition, unless that e-mail was in some way privileged and confidential (which it most certainly was not)...it could be posted anywhere unless there was some defamation issue, which there was not.

Agreed about Ijilana. But with all due respect to Ducasse, I saw him on TV vs Maine, and he didn't look that good. I remember seeing Maine's 2nd team All CAA de Jordan Stevens beat him like a drum on one play for a TFL. And it wasn't just that one play- the commentators even commented for as highly touted as he was, he just wasn't dominating. And the next week I saw Moats eat his lunch. Tyler Eastman from Maine looked better than Ducasse from what I saw (Maine/UMass on TV and against JMU live (and did a far better job against Moats).SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:ur2K wrote:With TSN and Coulson running it, who outside of AE really had a chance?

Re: Wallace Reports Coulson No Longer at Sports Network
Ducasse is interesting because as a junior I gave him a 6th-7th round grade and thought he was developmental and I saw several games this year and there were times he was a top 100 pick the way he played and times that I really thought he was overrated. He is just inconsistent and struggled with tweener speed rushers. I think he will be very solid at guard in the NFL. He has the tools, strength, etc. I honestly believe that Ijalana is better but Ducasse has solid 2nd round grades from a lot of teams and he will go in the top 50-75 of the draft. I was just pointing out that being a 2-time 1st-team all-CAA pick, 1st team All-American, and his stock being so high that you could argue for the fact that he would have been worthy to put on it. If Ijalana does not join Sczcur on the list this year then I will be disappointed. Not sure if you know but Ijalana played with a high ankle sprain in the postseason and I thought he was solid even on that.BDKJMU wrote:Agreed about Ijilana.
Funny you mention Eastman because he is a sleeper name I am hearing who has impressed some people in the practices in El Paso. I think he will get in a camp. Still though I thought Ijalana was the best OL in the CAA this past year even though Ducasse is going to be drafted so high and McCracken has the big name.

Re: Wallace Reports Coulson No Longer at Sports Network
Yeah I figured that. Although with two people being in different states I am not sure how that law works. I do think that someone should probably ask permission to post an email word for word though. Like you said it is an etiquette issue. Dave has always been great with me though and I consider him a close friend. In this economy and for a man with a wife and kids I just hope he finds something soon because I know it is tough out there.danefan wrote:Depends on which state you live in SCFBF.
I'm not so sure the law would extend to emails anyway. I think it may be more of an etiqutte issue than anything.

Edited my previous. When I mentioned Jordan from Maine I meant Jordan Stevens.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:Ducasse is interesting because as a junior I gave him a 6th-7th round grade and thought he was developmental and I saw several games this year and there were times he was a top 100 pick the way he played and times that I really thought he was overrated. Not sure if you know but Ijalana played with a high ankle sprain in the postseason and I thought he was solid even on that.BDKJMU wrote:
Agreed about Ijilana. But with all due respect to Ducasse, I saw him on TV vs Maine, and he didn't look that good. I remember seeing Maine's 2nd team All CAA de Jordan beat him like a drum on one play for a TFL. And it wasn't just that one play- the commentators even commented for as highly touted as he was, he just wasn't dominating. And the next week I saw Moats eat his lunch. Tyler Eastman from Maine looked better than Ducasse from what I saw (Maine/UMass on TV and against JMU live (and did a far better job against Moats).

Didn't know about Ijilana with the ankle sprain in the postseason. Yep, he still looked good even with that. Saw Nova play twice live (vs Temple and JMU) and 3x on TV (the 2 W&M games and the NC). Sczur is a really good player, no doubt, but his line, esp Ijalana, often made him look great. But I find it comical how Sczur gets 10x the recognition than Ijalana, even on this message board. IMHO Ijalana is the best player on Nova's team, not Sczur or Whitney. Its just a typical case of an o-lineman not getting his due.
