I don't think of White Trash as simply a poor white person. When I say "white trash" I'm usually referring to a racist, homophobic piece of **** that sits in his trailer drinking shitty beer all day, beats his wife, beats and likely molests his children, and is a generally worthless ****.

There are plenty of rural, lower income white folks that are amazing people and are nowhere close to being white trash.

White trash transcends wealth and geographic location.

I agree that just because someone is white and poor that they aren't necessarily "white trash". I tend to think that part of being white trash is also being a ne'er do well. They probably don't vote at all, but the people that I know that fit my definition of white trash mostly vote or consider themselves republican.

It is written by Senator James Webb (D-VA).

Seriously. Give it a look. You might even find your own people in there, as well.

All that being said, and with Webb's narrative in mind, you should at least feel a little guilt for piling on the 'rednecks' in this country. Our heritage of dissent and contrarianism (and perceived backwardness) is born of a long and honorable tradition.
