It's been covered AZ. The Constitution specifiably covered this as Federal responsibility. Try to pay attention.

Is it constitutional for the federal government to ignore its responsibility to provide secure borders, thereby placing an enormous social, criminal and financial burden on the states? Just asking.

Way to twist my words.

Is it constitutional for congress to ignore their responsibility?? NO. That is why we have elections. The people that they were supposed to be responsible for keeping Congress in check were wealthy land owners. You know, people with something to lose.

Is it A GOOD IDEA for congress to ignore their responsibility??
Obviously. It gets them reelected. They have been doing it for 210 years.

It does both. And it literally says the Constitution GRANTS the rights to government.
All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States
It then goes on to list powers GRANTED to the Congress.

Next section (section 9) it lists limits on Congress' power

Next section (section 10) it lists the powers prohibited of states.
You are conveniently missing the fundamental key of all legislative powers being subordinate to the Bill of Rights. Again, the Constitution is a list of the limits of governmental power, not a vehicle for the expansion of the same. If you still think that, then whatever Constitutional scholarship you may have paid for in your school years was wasted money.

That's right. And it's a shame to see Johnny Mac pandering to this law, just because he has a tough primary.

Oh, go blow a homeless hep-C hispanic, Hippie.

The law will be ruled unconstitutional. But I'm in full agreement with AZ's decision to pass the law. Congress has dropped the political football with immigration, generally by pandering to alien-rights groups. I wholeheartedly support AZ's bitchslapping Congress with this passage.

(I smfh all day when the lefty news sources kept headlining with, "Arizona passes a law to make being in the U.S. illegally a crime. President Obama has said the law is misguided." One added incredulous emphasis and a smirk to the phrase, "...being in the U.S. illegally a crime." as if to imply farcical rationale.)

Chizz... since it appears that you and I are on the same side of the fence on this issue, I have a question for you.

Given that the Federal gov't has continually been lax in enforcing immigration laws, what, in your opinion, is the best way to let the government know that this is a hot issue and something needs to be done? I ask this because it seems to me that what Arizona has done may well be the only way to at least bring attention to the problem.

The Federal government has no choice but to react to this. It will either have to assert its own authority in striking down the AZ law, or it will have to acquiesce. Either way, this is going to force the issue. Personally, I think that the governor may well know that there is no way his law will stand, but also knows that having it struck down might pave the way to more Federal enforcement.

Do you see a better way?

If you read my posts all the way back - you'll see I completely agree with Arizona doing this - it certainly works to
1) Point out the Federal Gov't complete lack of effectiveness
2) State wide support for in-state control of immigration
3) A nice wake up call

I'm all about states rights..!!!
Which tends to make me not a very popular liberal
I don't have to agree with it or not - to recognize that I like it... I'd love to see the state of Washington start taxing churches locally and billing them for impact assessments - I'd like to see the state of Washington tax cigarettes another 500% and use that money to treat smoking & cancer patients as a kind of FUND

there's all kind of unconstitutional sh!t I'd LOVE Washington to do..!! states rights..!!!

So, in short, you don't see a better way? Because I don't, either. There's just too many interests in Washington that are in direct conflict with the best interests of the country (be they social, economic, etc etc etc).

I wonder how Jon and/or MJ and/or SK would weigh in on this since you obviously have a consevrative opinion on the matter? I'm guessing .... silence.

Each state has unique issues based on geographical location, socio-economic, farming, technology, regional industries, etc. etc. there's a million of 'em

Our Federal Government is controlled by lobby groups, special interest, and self interest... as I said state officials are more easily influenced and controlled based on the needs of the local individual

So it only makes sense - states rights are important
and in this case Arizona (like it or not) is showing the federal government that it will do what it's citizens are asking for regardless of how the Federal Goverment feels

I like that... no matter what the issue is
