How about the Hens catch a comercial flight to California to play Cal Poly? I did not think so.

It is kind of funny though to hear westerners tell us how awful it is in the east because it's so crowded and then they complain about having to travel great distances to get to anyone else.

Next.Did I accuse CP fans of crying? It's actually the rest of the westerners that have done all the crying. We have to travel too far. Our teams get snubbed.
I haven't seen any CP fans doing so yet.

Yeah that's real crazy. It would be like an easterner talking about being the financial, cultural, and sports hub of the world and then complaining about the traffic congestion.89Hen wrote:It is kind of funny though to hear westerners tell us how awful it is in the east because it's so crowded and then they complain about having to travel great distances to get to anyone else.

Still a good point. Looks like we're both guilty of wanting it both ways. But this is a sports board, so I'll stick with the sports talk. when it suits meUrsus A. That's why I was scratching my head though. You don't make comments that the answer is so obvious to that it seems out of place. We all like the good about our situation. We all put up with the bad of our situation but feel quite free to use it as a reason for any problem and also as the catalyst for a gripe session.

So yeah....ODU vs. Cal Poly should be a great game.
I think ODU takes this one at home and enters itself into the playoff discussion if it can run the table from here on out.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
I would say we do that because the easteners just dismiss the travel time as nothing because they have to travel 40 miles in three hours. Distance is a real bitch that seems to be dismissed as nothing by the peeps out east. I don't usually bitch myself but to say its the same as a long bus ride over a short distance is a bit off base.89Hen wrote:It is kind of funny though to hear westerners tell us how awful it is in the east because it's so crowded and then they complain about having to travel great distances to get to anyone else.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
IMO sitting in traffic for an hour vs actually driving 70 miles in an hours is no contest on which one is more taxing. It's 100 miles for me to get to Hens games, but because I'm always doing it off hours, it only takes me 1:40. It's the easiest drive in the world. Some work days on the beltway I may have to go to a meeting that is 15 miles away and it takes me 45 minutes... that drive feels 100x worse.Thumper 76 wrote:I would say we do that because the easteners just dismiss the travel time as nothing because they have to travel 40 miles in three hours. Try getting on a bus and driving 3 1/2 hours to an airport. Then fly for 4 hours with a 2 or 3 hour lay over in Dallas or Denver on the way. Get on another bus and drive another 3 or 4 hours. Then do it 5 straight weeks while trying to get in practices and maintain your grades at a very challenging school. Do you think it might have an effect on your performance on Saturdays? You would be lying if you said it would not.89Hen wrote:IMO sitting in traffic for an hour vs actually driving 70 miles in an hours is no contest on which one is more taxing. I am not bitching. It is what it is, I just think most people on the east have no idea how bad it can be for a team on the west coast in a 5 team conference. We are joining the Big Sky which will help a ton.

I'm not going to quibble too much because I agree that it's a pain, but they're doing that this week, not five weeks in a row. I'm sure they bussed the two and a half hours to Fresno last week. EDIT: Actually, they're probably not doing that this week, I'd be willing to be they're flying directly into ORF after one stop.
Would they not fly into Austin to go to San Marcos? I found some pretty cheap flights directly from LAX to Austin and its only a 30 minute bus ride to San Marcos. And surely they flew directly to Houston to go to Lake Charles. That would avoid a layover (but you still get a 2 hour bus trip).
I think the worst trip is next week. My guess is they are going to bus the whole 9 or 10 hours to Cedar City. THAT will be a pain.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
I have to admit I really noticed this on my trips to Tennessee the last couple of years. Out here you can speed up or slow down until you find a position on the road where you aren't looking at the back of somebody else's vehicle, and that takes a lot of the stress out of it, at least for me. By Montana standards the raw distance from the Atlanta airport to Chattanooga is only a medium road trip, but the constant vigilance to maintain position in the flow of traffic while keeping track of all the people moving in and out of my blind spots made it a lot more tiring for me.89Hen wrote: . . . You're not alone there. The drive between the DC beltway and Richmond has to be one of the worst drives anywhere. There's nowhere to go and you are stuck in an accordian for 100 miles.griz8791 wrote:Out here you can speed up or slow down until you find a position on the road where you aren't looking at the back of somebody else's vehicle, and that takes a lot of the stress out of it, at least for me.

That's why I will often take back roads between the two. You just plan on the extra time and lose the aggravation of that drive with going back in time 50 years when travel had entirely different aggravations....89Hen wrote:You're not alone there. That is right it is not every week, and you are right that next week is the worse. It is a 10+ hour bus ride to Cedar City, Utah.mcveyrl wrote:SloStang wrote: Try getting on a bus and driving 3 1/2 hours to an airport. Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
SloStang, do you know when Cal Poly's practicing here at ODU? I know it's today (probably at Foreman Field), but I'm not sure at what time. I'm free for the rest of the day and I'd like to check it out if possible (if it hasn't ended already).
Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
Sorry, I have no idea what time they practice. I would bet it would be closed though.∞∞∞ wrote:SloStang, do you know when Cal Poly's practicing here at ODU? Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
If it's at the practice field, then yeah, probably. But if it's at Foreman Field, the parking garage over looking the stadium is open 'cause it's used for students and staff during the school day. Anyways, if you don't know, then it doesn't matter. Thanks anyways. Lookin' forward to tomorrow!SloStang wrote:Sorry, I have no idea what time they practice. We used to drive to Reno for the EWU - Nevada games back when the Wolfpack was in the BSC. It was fun counting the miles between seeing another car in either direction on U.S. 395. If memory serves, the record was on the stretch between Wagon Tire Oregon and Lakeview. It was 36 miles.griz8791 wrote:I have to admit I really noticed this on my trips to Tennessee the last couple of years.
