compare him to the catchers in the league... it isn't even CLOSE. Carlos Santana may be good enough someday to compete offensively, but for the combination of offense, defense and position scarcity is what makes the guy so remarkable.
TwinTownBisonFan wrote:also - the one season of home run numbers wasn't an "aberration" look at where his homers went out playing at the metrodome... almost EVERY SINGLE ONE went out in the left center field gap... a gap that just so happens to be 6-8 feet DEEPER at Target Field... where a dozen or more Mauer doubles fell last season - and since most of Mauer's '09 homers fell in the first two or three rows... there you have it.
And my point all along is, when he's moved to 1B next year (or DH) and he's still a 10/80 guy, you'll bemoan his $23 million salary that's single-handedly keeping the Twins irrelevent for the next 6 years. Because it's GOING to happen...you KNOW it. I know it. The whole WORLD knows it....so you might as well start comparing him to first basement NOW, becuase the bulk of that contract is going to be paid out with him manning that position.
Given the Morneau is the franchise 1B... probably not. Will they move him? Sure. I suspect either to right field or third base... I'm hopeful that they teach him to be a second baseman a-la Craig Biggio... but I'm thinking he may end up going to the outfield like BJ Surhoff did. However... and this cannot be understated... the Twins were in a bind... had he been a free agent after last season - he'd have pulled huge money from somewhere... and if the Twins lost their meal-ticket, their hometown star... They would have seen a 5-7,000 drop in season tickets. THAT is how popular the guy is in MN. It also would have frankly been a public scandal, given that keeping Mauer was one of THE primary reasons for building Target Field...

Is he overpaid? Yep. Sure is. But the Twins overpaid for a guy they COULD NOT AFFORD TO LOSE.

RIP, HK
RIP, indeed. I saw a lot of Sawx games in college, but I never saw Boston play the Twins while Killebrew was still with them. Saw him plenty on TV, though. :thumb:

Well, then Twinkies fans need to STFU about losing...from now until 2018 because they'd better get used to it. How many butts in the seats are there going to be after a season or two like THIS one? :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

And no matter WHERE they move him he'll still be a slap-hitting .300 hitter manning a power position.

Z still thinks hr are all that matters. I'd bet he is willing to pay Adam Dunn more than mauer even though the only thing Dunn does better is hit the ball 400 feet

You'd be wrong. But there are literally dozens and dozens of guys who hit like Mauer, and make nowhere near what he's making. And as a DH he'll be even MORE grossly overpaid. I have no sympathy for pathetic Twins fans.

Heard a great Killebrew quote today on the radio. His wife was complaining about their boys tearing up the front yard playing ball and HK replied "We're not raising grass, we're raising boys." :thumb:

Killebrew will be buried in the Phoenix area on Friday.

Coincedentaly, the Twins start a three game series in Phoenix on Friday.

I will be at that game (already planned).

I think I'd have to rank them:

1. Killebrew
2. Blyleven
3. Puckett
4. Hrbeck
5. Gaetti
:ohno:

1. Killebrew
2. Carew
3. Oliva
4. Puckett
5. Blyleven
6. Hrbek
7. Santana
8. Viola
9. Gaetti
10. Brunansky

maybe some movement on 8-10 some other names like Allison, Molitor, Reardon, Nathan, Mauer and Morneau to be considered...

1. Killer
2. Carew
3. Puckett
4. Oliva
5. Kaat
