Both SHSU and Cal Poly played great defense. Using your argument, MSU didn't look very good tonight. Bottom line is both SHSU and MSU find ways to win FB games. Should be a great game.

Re: Stony Brook @ Montana State
Well, it could be that it didn't come across watching it on line but but it didn't. Not like what comes across at Missoula or at NDSU's dome.
As far as the QB play. I mean, I was not impressed at all with his accuracy. If you just look at stats it was OK but not great. 12 of 22 (54%) for 208 yards with 1 TD and 1 interception. I guess part of it is hearing that a guy is supposed to be really good then seeing something that looks pretty mediocre.
Of course maybe I'm not giving enough credit to Stony Brook's defense. They are a team that played very competively with Syracuse and smoked Army. And I was on this board last week saying they've got athletes on both side of the ball.
What will be will be. I wouldn't mind seeing Montana State beat Sam Houston State at all. It's like I said to other McNeese State fans last year when Sam Houston State was making a run:
" Sam Houston State winning the national championshp would be like if you have been chasing a woman for 10 years and can never quite get her then one day you wake up and find out she married Barney Fife."

Aside from TSU, EIU, and Poly, what other OOC quality wins did the conference have?JohnStOnge wrote:I don't think there's a lot of information on the Southland vs. other FCS leagues. They were 5-4 overall. I think UCA was competitive with Georgia Southern yesterday and had a chance to win.kalm wrote:For the record, SHSU won a very cold game in Cheney in 2004.
But yes, playing in cold, at altitude, with a packed stadium is a huge disadvantage for SHSU. They didn't dominate Poly like many were thinking yesterday, and the Southland did not have a very good OOC showing this year so I'm still thinking they might be paper bearcats.
MSU - 7.
With respect to the Big Sky there were three games. Stephen F. Austin played what I understand was a very competitive game in losing at Montana State, McNeese dominated Weber State to an extent as great as any Big Sky team dominated the Wildcats until clearing the bench late, and Sam Houston State won a very competitive game at home against Cal Poly. Not really seeing an indication of dramatic superiority on the part of the Big Sky vs. the Southland in those three games.
Having said that I do think it is an advantage to Montana State playing at home. It's just that I was struck by how dead the atmosphere at Bozeman came across on the webcast I was watching yesterday and how little energy there seemed to be. Big contrast to when, for instance, I watched some of the North Dakota State game and you could feel the electricity of the crowd jumping out of the monitor. And that's what it's been like when Southland teams have gone to Washington - Grizzly. Very loud, Can't hear themselves call signals on offense. Lots of home field energy causing, I think, adrenaline spikes in the Montana players. It's just not going to be that kind of hell on earth for Sam Houston State Friday night; not unless it's a lot different then than it was yesterday. And I don't think it can be like Washington-Griz. The size and configuration of the stadium don't allow for that. At least I don't think so.
Re: Stony Brook @ Montana State
SHSU has a lot of weapons on offense and run an option offense. Cal Poly's defense faces an option offense all year in practice and had two weeks to prepare for it. MSU has a short week (Friday night game) and does not see it every day in practice. I know MSU has a very good defense and most consider it better than Cal Poly's, but it might be a case of Cal Poly matching up better against SHSU. Cal Poly has a very good front seven. I would not be surprise to see more offensive output from SHSU come Friday. This is basically the same offense that put 49 points on the board and 501 yards of total offense against the Bobcats last year in the playoffs.

Cats have last years film on Sammy and probably can get Montana's film as well. UM shut them down in the 2nd half and MSU will be ready for the offense this time. Doesn't mean that the result will be different but I think MSU comes to play at home and wins a close one.

Like I said, there's not a lot of information. But, yes, McNeese State's win over Middle Tennessee State was a quality non conference win. Yes, Middle Tennessee State got blown out by Arkansas State in the game for the Sun Belt Conference Championship. But they finished 8-4. And if you look at power rankings where you can get some idea as to where they'd fit in in FCS they're ranked behind 5 FCS teams in Sagarin (higher than 5 of the 8 teams left in the FCS playoffs) and behind only one FCS team (ND State) in Massey.Aside from TSU, EIU, and Poly, what other OOC quality wins did the conference have?
Now, you can quibble with power ratings to some extent. But Middle Tennessee State, this year, was clearly equivalent to at least a top 10 FCS team in caliber and probably equivalent to a top 5 type FCS team in caliber.
Of course that was not the same McNeese State team as the one that engaged in Southland Conference play as Weber State wiped them out with injuries in the second half of that game. Not saying Weber State played dirty or anything. It just happened. Sometimes it just works out that way.

I will be pulling for Montana State because I most definitely do NOT want Sam Houston State to win a national championship for various reasons.Like I said...

BUT, there just isn't anything in the interconference results this year to suggest dramatic Big Sky superiority over the Southland. And if you look at power ratings...which are basically just a way of looking at everybody a team played in the context of all of the other results...Sam Houston State is rated higher than Montana State is.
It's very close in those terms and Montana State is playing at home. But I just can't shake how Montana State looked against Stony Brook. Especially the quarterback. I'd heard that he's supposed to be something else and he just wasn't.
Like I said maybe I'm not giving Stony Brook enough credit. I started a thread a week before about how they have good athletes. And they beat the CAA automatic bid in the first round.
But Montana State just didn't look as good as advertised to me.

So tell me, do YOU think he looked like an All American in that Stony Brook game?
Frankly if I was just going on the games I've watched this year the best looking quarterback I've seen plays for Old Dominion. And in terms of what I've actually seen...and admittedly I've just seen one Montana State game...the guy at Montana State wouldn't even be on my radar. That's just based on having watched him during that one game.
