Syrian jets take off from air base U.S. missiles struck: Syrian Observatory

Syrian warplanes took off from an air base which was hit by U.S. cruise missiles on Friday, and carried out air strikes on rebel-held areas in the eastern Homs countryside, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The U.S. Navy had fired dozens of missiles at the air base near Homs city in response to a chemical attack this week which Washington and its allies blamed on the Damascus government.

The British-based Observatory, a group monitoring the Syrian war using sources on the ground, said eight people had been killed in the U.S. attack.

The extent of the damage to the Shayrat air base was not entirely clear, but the Syrian warplanes had "done the impossible" in order to continue using it for sorties, the Observatory told Reuters.

The "loiter" feature is pretty cool. It's incredible what we put into missiles. It's not just fuel and a warhead. There are guidance systems, boosters, camera, return system data, provide target image, etc...

I think it's actually a good sign that Trump isn't doing what he said he said he'd do and doing what he said he wouldn't do during the campaign because if he would do what he said he would do and not do during the campaign it'd be a disaster. Frankly, it'd be a lot better for the country if he doesn't act like he said he'd act during the campaign.

The Alt Right was very important to Trump getting elected. If he decides he wants to run for a second term the Alt Right will be very important to that effort. We'll see what happens.

Warmonger? I don't think you can say that when he was kind enough to warn Russia in enough time to clear the airfield.

The Russians had a a one-hour notice, meaning the Syrians had a one-hour notice. They probably moved the aircraft from that airfield before the missiles struck.

We probably destroyed hangars, control tower and other infrastructure. The attack wasn't meant to produce high casualties.

I'm a little surprised we didn't make an attempt to destroy the runways or have any success doing so. We certainly have weapons that are effective for that mission, but Tomahawks aren't the weapon of choice.

Yeah I wouln't think you'd use expensive tomahawks trying to crater a runway..

A cratered runway would have been repaired within a day or two, and you don't use Tomahawks for that anyway

What would be really interesting is if the Syrians DIDNT get that 1 hr notice

I'd love to be in THAT meeting afterwards

A very compelling case for why this attack was wrong, both strategically and constitutionally. Especially the quote from Robert Farley.

It was wrong when Obama did in Libya and wrong here. Congress needs to check Trump.

Congress will NEVER check the briad warmaking powers of the executive.

Congress LIKES not having to make these decisions because they dont have to defend them later.

This is the new normal- and all those "living document" assholes should probably STFU about it because they own a large part of the responsibility.

Here's some more top notch journalism from The Atlantic for you:

https://www.theatlantic.com/internation ... ck/521883/

The title of the article might well be one of the stupidest things I've ever read. Did they really think this "deal" touted by Obama and Kerry meant anything?

The article spells out precisely that Lavrov outmaneuvered the WH but obviously doesn't highlight the conclusion.

Atlantic article title in 2021:

"How Does Iran Have Nuclear Weapons?"

1) Just because it's supposed to be a living document (as Jefferson suggested) doesn't mean every last part of it needs to be changed.

2). I drink every time you mention Lavrov.

Every time we ignore even the smallest departure from the original intent of the Constitution it contributes to the ultimate weakening of the document. We are witnessing the bottom of the slippery slope in our own lifetimes.

Sergey Lavrov is a brilliant diplomat and he acts entirely in the interests of Russia and no other. He's an adversary but I admire him. Drink up.

No, but all the doom and gloom "the end in our lifetimes" schtick gets old. We'll be fine.

When the President, Congress, or anyone else acts unconstitutionally... it should be challenged. But, everytime doesn't mean that we are approaching the end times of the good ole US of A.
