Two-timin' bastards. Yeah, if it's Canada's sport, then why do all their athletes come here to play?

Re: 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Thread
Tough loss today, but this was a great Olympics for US mens hockey. We faced Canada's "A" game today, on their home ice, and they needed overtime to finish us off. Look what Canada's "A" game did to Russia. We proved that we are as good as any country in the world when it comes to hockey.
We also had a young team, we should get that much better in the next four years. We weren't supposed to medal at all this time. I think we will be one of the medal favorites in the next Olympics.

As for why they come to America, you'll have to ask Gary Bettman why they keep relocating teams to sh*tty locations such as Phoenix or Florida.

At least he is not stupid enough to put a team in a really shitty location like Iowa.JayJ79 wrote:Because that is who he was drafted by.....Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:

Im not sue why he thought those were bad places for teams. Hell if Iowa had a pro team I'd be one of their biggest fansdbackjon wrote:At least he is not stupid enough to put a team in a really shitty location like Iowa.JayJ79 wrote:

There are the "purists" that think warm-weather areas have no business having a hockey team...clenz wrote:Im not sue why he thought those were bad places for teams. Hell if Iowa had a pro team I'd be one of their biggest fansdbackjon wrote:

Fact is, CANADA couldn't support all it's teams. Northern cities didn't always support their teams. So they moved.

Soft? Best player in the world (yeah, better than Ovie, and I'm a huge Ovie fan - but results matter) breaks in free and scores from 10 feet away and that's soft? Low to the stick side like Carlson's goal to win Juniors on 1/1/10 - was that soft too?Mountaineer wrote:Brutal way to lose on a soft goal like that. Still the US went toe to toe with the Canucks and had a chance to win the game. Miller was awesome all tournament.

Everything that I've heard has said that Phoenix (as well as Nashville, Tampa Bay, and Florida) were having all sorts of financial problems. Maybe things have improved recently (I haven't paid all that close of attention), but I'm not holding my breath on it.dbackjon wrote:There are the "purists" that think warm-weather areas have no business having a hockey team...clenz wrote:Im not sue why he thought those were bad places for teams. And you're right. Iowa probably doesn't have a high enough population to successfully support a major pro franchise.

Hen's prediction about the ratings for that game weren't far off.

I'm not so sure about that. If we were to get an NHL team, there would be a lot of interest I think. There isn't much for the "minor league" hockey we have in Des Moines. However, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapds, Council Blufs, Sioux City, and I'll included Omaha here have very strong hockey fan bases. The only problem is the team would be in Des Moines and week night drives to Des Moines from the aforementioned cities is a bit long.Rob Iola wrote:FIFYclenz wrote:Im not sue why he thought those were bad places for teams. Not sure if the ability to draw 3K to a hockey game is really enough to sustain an NHL team.clenz wrote:I'm not so sure about that. Mike and Mike were discussing viewership this morning. The factoid that struck me:Grizalltheway wrote:Hen's prediction about the ratings for that game weren't far off.![]()

On Sunday, 80% of Canadian households tuned in to the gold medal game and 50% watched the game in its entirety.
In the US, only 17.6% of households tuned in to the gold medal game. Other US numbers: 2010 Super Bowl between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts 46.4%; World Series clincher for the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series 13.4%; six games of the 2009 NBA finals averaged 8.4% each.

I may be wrong, but a 17.6 rating does not mean 17.6%. I believe the percentage is usually double the rating number.93henfan wrote:Mike and Mike were discussing viewership this morning. According to gatw's link...
"To put the numbers in perspective, Sunday's game drew a higher overnight rating than every World Series game since 2004 (including every game of Yankees/Phillies last year), every NBA Finals telecast since 1998, and every NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four game since at least '98."

A ratings point equals one percent of all televisions. A ratings share equals one percent of televisions actually turned on.89Hen wrote: I may be wrong, but a 17.6 rating does not mean 17.6%. I believe the percentage is usually double the rating number.

Notice, not once did I ever mention that the crowds for W'loo games would support and NHL team. I said that the crowds from the other cities might be able to, but the drive to Des Moines for a weeknight game would probably be too much, meaning lagging support.
I get that you only post to make douchebag jokes, but sometimes you have to read before you do it.

Your theory holds true whenever 50% of all televisions are turned on. One point would be two shares!89Hen wrote:I must be thinking of "share".93henfan wrote:

All of those teams draw between 2100 and 3200 (well, not Council Bluffs, as they don't have a USHL team). So even if every fan from those cities drove to Des Moines, that would total a crowd of 13k-14k. But obviously EVERY fan is not going to make that trip.clenz wrote:You didn't read my post did you? I guess I just dont' understand your reasoning how even though the state couldn't support a minor league pro franchise, that they'll support a major league pro franchise.
