Old Dominion at Delaware
Re: Old Dominion at Delaware
I think two simple solutions that could help UD's situation are:
-Not charging for parking .
-Allowing people to tailgate during and a bit after the football game. Seems assinine to tell grown adults paying good money that tailgating will "promptly" stop at kickoff.
And like you've said 93', undercutting your season ticket prices also doesn't help.

Re: Old Dominion at Delaware
I don't see a problem with judging a visiting team's travel crowd. But I think several things need to be taken into account such as distance, game time, weather, etc. Travel crowds should be judged by the average of similar situations. For example, UR, JMU and W&M should be compared to each other when visiting Norfolk for games with similar weather and start times (after 2:00 pm). I would lump Towson and Delaware together in another group (distance would dictate that JMU be included with TU and UD but with so many JMU fans attending W&M games, and so many living in Hampton Roads and Richmond, they won't have a problem attending). The remainder is the last group. This grouping would be the same for UR and W&M, and would change for all other schools. JMU would likely have the VA schools and TU and UD in one large group.93henfan wrote:And you're right, Trip. I mentioned on here that the attendance by both schools sucked, but that is not saying anything derogatory about ODU.
Back in the old days, like only three years ago, we wouldn't be having this discussion. We'd be celebrating the fact that we sold out the place so early in the week that out of towners were SOL for getting a ticket, short of paying a scalper.
Hey, there's no denying the fact that UD is a program in decline (and by decline, I mean not really doing anything to improve while being passed by peers) off the field. Luckily, the product on the field is still pretty damned good.

The only thing that is going to change the current mojo in UD football's fanbase is a major investment into football facilities by the administration. They've 'maximized revenue' from those who can afford the price. Now the administration needs to make a move that shows a real commitment to the program and fans.
And it's certainly not ODU's fault that UD didn't have more fannies in the seat on Saturday. JMU has never travelled particularly well to UD either. Timing and weather probably played a part for ODU's fans. I think JMU's lack of attendance has been that their fans are mostly poor, stupid and high on some really dank homegrown chiba.

Not sure you want to get into a pissing contest about attendance right now...Let's face it, the ODU game really stacked up well for UD attendance wise. Most of their fans could go to the game and still make the early bird special at their eatery of choice (perhaps the Newark Shoney's or perhaps the Denny's) AND they could still make their 6:30 bedtime.
And don't give me that crap about weed, you KNOW a larger percentage of your fan base tokes it, even if it is medicinal for their cataracts...

Once UD, unveils their new architectural plans for the Death Star, our home attendance will reverse completely.

Got it. It's because we're mostly poor, stupid, and doped up on weed. Sometimes I think that's why we draw well at home...State Line Liquors wrote:I meant traveling fans.mcveyrl wrote:

Precisely! Poor people can't usually afford to go fancy places like Newark, DE. Stupid people usually end up in Lynchburg when they're trying to drive north from Harrisonburg. And people that smoke the greenest buddah, usually end up at Golden Corral rather than Tubby Raymond Field.

If high school games I go to down here in Florida charge for parking then colleges/universities are definitely gonna charge for parking as well.∞∞∞ wrote:I think two simple solutions that could help UD's situation are:

Also, probably already mentioned before but I think ODU's attendance numbers this past week @ UDel were greatly affected a) weather and b) timing. Weather is self expalanatory and lets say if the game was a 3:00 start instead of a noon start I think you would have had a lot more ODU fans there. I think that would have made it a possible day trip for ODU fans. Leave around 7 am and get up there at 1 pm (I assume it takes about 6 hours to get to Newark), game starts at 3, ends at 6. Yeah you'd be home around 1-2 am but at least you'd have all of sunday to relax and re-energize. Hell trip and I went to Liberty from ODU for a bball game a couple years ago on a weeknight and we got back around 2 or 3 am and I still went to my 8 am class that next day.

It was me and I wasn't blaming ODU for not filling the Tub at all; in fact, I stated as much. Our issues with subpar home attendance the last two years are well known, no thanks to an ill-timed and poorly planned fundraising plan.∞∞∞ wrote:I saw that comment on GoHens where one UD fan partially blamed us for not helping fill up the Tub; I thought it was funny.
I was just very underwhelmed by the lack of ODU fans at this game; I just expected more from a fanbase so hungry for D-I FB and one that has done so well with selling tickets to home games. Most schools around the conference & the FCS don't often bring more than a couple hundred to Newark.
