When did it become acceptable.............

Post by ALPHAGRIZ1 »

For people from another country to come to the USA (legally) seeking a better life for them and their children then when they get here they take up causes about their former country?

If you move here from Israel, Mexico, Palestine etc you moved more than likely because your country is a shithole and you wanted out, yet you come here and want to implement the same problems instead of working as an AMERICAN to make this country better.

We are not racially profiling you either, we just think your all a bunch of ungrateful assholes.

Wow it took one post to get the exact response I wanted.

Your wrong of course because when people came to this country originally they did so and took care of this country instead of worrying about what England thought.

So your point is that you think this is new behavior in American history..?
Or simply that you don't like it and it makes you angry..?

I don't think it's ever been "acceptable" Alphie in the sense that you are thinking about it. You seem to only focus on recent immigration history though. You forgot to mention the German immigrants who took up the cause of the Mother Land during WWII. What about the English immigrants who took up the cause of the English during the Revolution? What about the Irish/Catholic immigrants who brought over "Catholicism" amidst the outcry of the Protestant natives who feared the immigrants/catholic church would sully the "American Ideal" and ruin the values of our country?

I hate to be the one Albert, but when people came here originally there wasn't any England. :coffee:

And when the first people from England came here there wasn't any "this country" either and they very much were all about what their English investors thought.

Yes indeed you were clear what your point was...
However it was so ignorant and historically uninformed that I was hoping I misunderstood your point...

It's difficult to even figure out where to start...
1) Did the European settlers on their arrival adopt the practices and politics of the Native Americans here..?
2) Did we almost elect George Washington as a King..?
3) Has every new wave of immigrants had a history of violence..?
4) Are there 100 more questions like this - that serve to awaken you..?

Amen. I finished a work assignment the last week of April, before I took my new job, and worked with about 50-60 mexicans in a manufacturing plant. Screaming for decades to be treated equally, yet everyone I worked with REFUSED to speak English, and generally looked down upon the Americans they were working with, congregated only with each other, etc, etc, yet if the white race does that, we are labeled racists and being insensitive.

I am convinced these people don't give a rat's ass about America or its ideals or history nor do they want to assimilate into being an American, they just want to get out of their shithole of a nation that they were born in. Multiculturalism is going to bring about the end of American sovereignty if we're not careful. I am all for a race/culture celebrating their values and customs but don't FORCE THE REST OF US to celebrate it and don't look down on us when we celebrate our heritage. NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR BEING WHITE!!! :thumb:

Germans supporting WWII? Small minorities as a proportion of the German-American population of the time.

English at the time of the Revolution? Hello! We fought a war for that one. Do you want to fight another war DJ?

Irish Catholics? Lots of interesting and relevant history in this case. Nothing for either side (or any side) to get too smug about.

The exceptions either prove the rule or prove nothing. Unless you believe in nothing, like dawg, or everything, like jizz, Alphie made a good point.

There is some validity to the consept of American exceptionalism, as long as we wish it to be. The book on the United States of America is, on balance, still the best book in the history of humans.

---- Does it matter if they were a small minority? Goes to Alphie's point that immigrants came over and took the cause of their home country.

---- The point is that colonials who were trying to "establish" this country were divided. We act like they were a homogeneous group of one infallible mind.

Yes, Alpha Griz made a valid point that many immigrants and immigrant groups in our nation's history have been grateful for the opportunity to be here and be Americans, and work hard NOT to import the violence and political dysfunction from their old countries. The German Mennonites I grew up with would be one case in point. My Asian family members are another case in point. Japanese Americans would perhaps be the most exemplary case in point.

I would add to Alphie's point that most immigrant groups have historically embraced the idea of American exceptionalism and wanted to be American, even in extreme cases where some groups carried over violence and politics from the old country. The lack of belief in American exceptionalism is indeed a recent historical phenomenon. Your own lack of belief does not change these facts.

You are quick to jump on Alpha Griz DJ, but you paint with the same broad brush to which you seem to object.

Wrong on the Germans - many actively supported Germany before the US entry in WWI. There were many German language schools, German newspapers, etc.

After the US Entry into WWI, many states banned German-language schools. Most German Language newspapers folded under pressure.

Points well taken, jon, but a large majority of former Germans, like those in central Texas and my Mennonite neighbors, spoke English, assimilated into American society, and were grateful to be here, even while striving to maintain ethnic pride and heritage - before and after WWI and WWII. Moreover, they were here legally.

Ethnic pride is not the issue.
