Worry that Gulf oil spreading into major current
BP said Monday it was siphoning some of the oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, but worries escalated about the ooze reaching a major ocean current that could carry it through the Florida Keys and up the East Coast.
BP PLC chief operating officer Doug Suttles said Monday on NBC's "Today" that a mile-long tube was funneling a little more than 42,000 gallons of crude a day from a blown-out well into a tanker ship.
That would be about a fifth of the 210,000 gallons the company and the U.S. Coast Guard have estimated are gushing out each day, though scientists who have studied video of the leak say it could be much bigger and even BP acknowledges there's no way to know for sure how much oil there is.
In the nearly a month since an oil rig called the Deepwater Horizon exploded off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 workers, BP has made several failed attempts to stop the leak, trying in vain to activate emergency valves and lowering a 100-ton container that got clogged with icy crystals.

What do you suggest - Public or nonprofits get involved? Maybe the government?
Clearly it's a fiasco with a lot of fail happening all around - private companies playing the blame game, shortcuts taken, failure to ensure adequate redundant backup systems, maybe some failure on the government's behalf on inspections, etc.
The big issue is getting it under control, then start burning the witches responsible.

I said something similar in another thread... and people demanded I pick ONE reason. It could not be a multitude of causes and people at fault.

Well, then you're a majority of ONE in the donk corner, KY. I haven't yet seen a single post from any lib blaming ANYTHING or anybody else other than BP. In fact, dback did everything but suck Hussein's DICK while congratulating him on the wonderful work the administration has done in response to this spill. Never mind that somebody in the administration was probably getting paid off behind the dumpster BEFORE the spill to look the other way on safety violations.Skjellyfetti wrote:ASUG8 wrote:Clearly it's a fiasco with a lot of fail happening all around - private companies playing the blame game, shortcuts taken, failure to ensure adequate redundant backup systems, maybe some failure on the government's behalf on inspections, etc.Right on.

Re: Worry that Gulf oil spreading into major current
I agree with that, but my problem comes from this - BP is a bad player in terms of safety, as their track record over the past 10 years is just atrocious within the industry. However, why is it that BP is only having safety related issues mainly here in the US? Why are we unable to properly regulate people like BP here while other countries are able to do so with better results? What about the US regulatory model (which has been pretty much bi-partisan over the past 20 years when you consider the Dems and GOP have pretty much shared control of both the White House and Congress over the past 20 years, and actually, may be slightly tipped to the Dems in terms of number of years) is failing in this regard? And not only do you see it in terms of feckless regulation, but also in response to incidents like this. I think it is BP's responsibility to fix this mess, but at the end of the day, why isn't the government able to do more to bring more expertise to bear in terms of coming up with a solution? Do we just not have the technical knowledge base in government to do this? And does that lack of technical knowledge in government impede our ability to thoroughly regulate the safety and environmental safeguards of various industries?dbackjon wrote:Or Norway, where the Government run Oil company puts safety above profits, and still manages to make billions.AZGrizFan wrote:
