Minor League umpire Dan Bellino filling in on the crew that includes Cowboy Joe West and Angel Hernandez threw Adrian Beltre out of the game tonight as Beltre was getting ready at third base for the top of the third inning.
Beltre struck out looking in the second inning on a ball that was clearly out of the zone... Beltre was talking to Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez whom he was teammates with before this season... For whatever reason... Bellino felt he needed to toss Beltre from the game. It was the first time in six years Beltre was ejected from a game...
Hernandez has confirmed to the media that he was having a conversation with Beltre at the time of the ejection.
After Beltre was ejected, Sox manager Terry Francona had to be restrained by the rest of the umpiring crew before he himself was ejected from the game.
For all you Sox haters out there, the Mariners took the game 4-2 though Boston won the series 2-1.
MLB owes Philadelphia and Boston apologies.

Re: A Minor League Umpire Strikes Again
The MLB umps have really been getting progressively worse the last three years. They had their asses handed to them in '99 and kind of learned their place in the last decade, but I think they're starting to think they are supposed to be part of the show again. I guess mommy never gave some of these assholes enough attention as kids.

The way I understood it, until recently, MLB umps were merely incompetent (with one or two exceptions like West). It took an NBA ref to think the world revolved around him.
I guess the world is changing....

Re: A Minor League Umpire Strikes Again
The fact that we have an umpire whom we all know as "Cowboy" Joe West just sums up the problems that some umpires present when they deem themselves the attraction of the game. Why MLB ever let him back when the umpire union screwed themselves years ago is beyond me - it's not like he was ever a good ump. And now apparently we have a whole cadre of minor league umps that have decided they're the central focus of the game - lovely.

Umpire gene pools have been diluted beyond recognition. I'm old enough to remember when Scott Rolen got tossed for the first time by a rookie ump named Dan Iassogna, a douchebag who's still in the league.

LOL you make it sound as if Rolen has been retired for 20 yearsIvytalk wrote:Umpire gene pools have been diluted beyond recognition. I'm old enough to remember when Scott Rolen got tossed for the first time by a rookie ump named Dan Iassogna, a douchebag who's still in the league.

Well, he is in his 15th season. It just seems like a long time ago that the Phillies sucked (i.e. when they had Rolen).UNHWildCats wrote:LOL you make it sound as if Rolen has been retired for 20 yearsIvytalk wrote:Umpire gene pools have been diluted beyond recognition. Wasn't Rolen the NL rookie of the year the same year that Garciaparra won the AL award?93henfan wrote:Well, he is in his 15th season.
