Slight twist on the first thread:

On what occasions have you actually voted for a member of the "other" party for a statewide or national office, and why? Only contested elections count. I'll start.

In 2002, I voted for the Democratic candidate for Delaware AG. He was a terrific trial lawyer with criminal defense experience and a very bright guy with a commitment to public service, who just happened to be a former law partner of mine. His opponent, the GOP incumbent, was significantly less qualified on the merits. Unfortunately, my candidate lost, largely because a "spoiler" Grren Party candidate attracted enough votes to tip the election to the incumbent.

In 1972, my very first voting-age presidential election, I wrote in Ed Muskie for President. I couldn't stand Richard Nixon, and McGovern was way too far to the left for my taste. I had actually campaigned a bit for the Humphrey-Muskie ticket in '68, and I always viewed Muskie as a thoughtful and articulate public servant.

Define contested. I live in a county where the entire governing body are Dems. All of our elections are uncontested.

BTW, I voted Dem the last two elections for State's Attorney General and State Comptroller. Both good eggs. Also voted for several Dems for County Council. I made it a one issue vote and the incumbents that voted my way on that issue got my vote. The ones that didn't, I voted for the Rep challenger. Of course the Dems won every single council seat.

In my first election, in 2000 - I voted for John Kline for Congress, he hired me in 98 - my first paid gig. Only time I've ever voted conk.

In 2008 - I voted for Dean Barkley (Independence Party) instead of Franken. (I'd vote to re-elect Franken now, after watching him in the Senate)

If your dictrict's dogcatcher makes at least $125K/year and is covered by a fat public union contract with a pension, I'll consider a move!

I've voted for a D state senate and state house candidate. Voted for a few Ds running for some county offices.
