Pittsburgh Pirates above .500 tracker.
I believe the Pirates at 35-34 and over .500 at this point in the season is the latest they have had a record over .500 since their last winning season so I believe this deserves it's own thread. GO PIRATES!!!!

Pirates lose 5-2 to the Indians. Now 35-36 on the season.

Interleague Play always destroys the Pirates...granted most things do, but Interleague and the Brewers are the scourge of our season annually.
It's really nice to have a competitive team, for once, though...especially considering Pedro Alvarez has been hurt all year and our top 3 catchers are all injured. Pitching and Andrew McCutchen can only do so much with so little help.

FWIW, if its making the playoffs or not and if its 1 game above .500 or 20 games above .500 I am really pulling for the Pirates to finish with a winning record this year. That franchise truly deserves it. Not sure if Pittsburgh fans deserve it though with having the Steelers and Penguins.

Re: Pittsburgh Pirates above .500 tracker.
.500 would be a landmark. I'm not exactly the most optimistic Pirates fan in the world...after all I started watching baseball in 1993 so I've seen a grand total of 0 .500 seasons from the baseball team I've rooted for my entire life...but the strides really have us where I thought we'd be next year, and that's without the help of Pedro Alvarez.ODUalum11 wrote:FWIW, if its making the playoffs or not and if its 1 game above .500 or 20 games above .500 I am really pulling for the Pirates to finish with a winning record this year. The extreme majority of the talent in the organization is still fairly low in the minors. AA Altoona has some good talent, but the A ball teams are insanely stacked. Once they start pushing through the Pirates could have a few decent seasons of being competitive before the realities of free agency kick our ass again...but it's just nice to have actual talent in the system. We've never really had that. Huntington turned our completely barren farm system into one of the best in baseball. It's nice to know going into the draft that we're actually going to draft the BPA and not a reliever expected to go in the late 20s 4th overall anymore.
That and McCutchen is already the best player we've had since Bonds. If we can keep him around we'll have something to build around, and considering he's 24 he'll actually be entering his prime as the team around him gets better. The last couple times we've had legitimate star players entering their prime they were surrounded by AA rosters (Bay and Giles, namely).
As for 'deserving' another team with success in Pittsburgh...hey, Pirates fans deserve something don't we? It is hard to complain too much about the Pirates when we have the Steelers and Penguins doing as well as they have, though.
(for the record I'm a born and raised Pittsburgher)

I live in Sarasota, Florida and have been to numerous Bradenton Marauders games. I was really impressed with some of the talent they have on that team. Anyway it looks like you migh be right about them doing terrible in interleague...already down 4-0 in the 1st.

I was at a Spring Training game a few years back in Bradenton (great park btw) and watched a fan accost the GM in the stands saying "We'd better make it back to .500 this year!"
The Twins fans (who were about 50% of the crowd) looked on stunned...

Yeah my dad and I caught a ton of games at mckechnie park last summer. Probably one of our favorites because it has that old school feel to it. Not to mention the marauders who play there were pretty good as well.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:I was at a Spring Training game a few years back in Bradenton (great park btw) and watched a fan accost the GM in the stands saying "We'd better make it back to .500 this year!"

Yeah, as a Brewers fan I am not too thrilled about this, we don't play them till August or something so we won't be able to rely on the annual beatdowns we put on them to keep us above them, and with the Yankmees up next at New York I am feeling a bit nervous.

God, **** the Brewers.
Can't believe the Pirates somehow managed to win the series against the Red Sox with all of the injuries we're going through.

I've had one hell of a busy week so I havent been able to see how the Pirates were doing. Glad to see they are still above .500 and even better that they took the series from the Red Sox.
They lost last night to the Blue Jays but sit at 40-39.

Pirates beat the Cubs 9-1 this afternoon, and head into the All-Star break at 47-43. That is good for 3rd in the NL Central, one game behind Milwaukee and St. Louis.

Great story brewing here. Bunch of talented young kids who don't know everybody expects them to suck. They even have a winning road record. I'd love to see the Bucs win that division. LaRussa's head would probably explode!

Re: Pittsburgh Pirates above .500 tracker.
A first-ever Keystone State playoff series would be cool. Just need the Bucko's to win their division, the Phils and NL West Champ to be 1 and 2 respectively and the Braves as the wildcard. Not an entirely unlikely scenario.Ivytalk wrote:Great story brewing here. Bunch of talented young kids who don't know everybody expects them to suck. They even have a winning road record. 3 All Stars for the first time since 1990.
Granted 2 were late replacements...but McCutchen not being on the original roster was a damn joke. Correia is there solely because of injuries...but, hey...leading or being tied for the league lead in wins for most of the season (not anymore) as a Pirate is worthy of praise. He already has more wins at the break than the Pirates leader has for 3 of the past 5 seasons. He's been a lesser pitcher than Karstens and Maholm...but wins is a sexier stat for an All Star game than WHIP.
