Boise State vs. Georgia
I'm looking forward to this one and wish it wasn't on at exactly the same time as Oregon vs. LSU. Interesting to me because Boise State has pretty much been handled every time it's played a SEC team in the past but it hasn't played a SEC team since having its breakout win against Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.
During the previous season (2005/2006) Boise State went to play at eventual SEC champion Georgia and got thumped 48-13. But that was a Boise State team that finished 9-4. The most recent previous Boise State foray into SEC country was when a Bronco team that finished 12-1 went to Arkansas to play a Razorback team that finished 9-5 (SEC West champ) in 2002. Arkansas won 41-14.
Now Boise State is going in as the favorite to get its first ever win over a SEC opponent. Should be interesting. I think Georgia will have better athletes overall. We're talking about a program that has 44 players on NFL rosters right now vs. a program that has 18 players on NFL rosters. But I think both Oregon in 2009 and Virginia Tech in 2010 had better athletes than Boise State did overall too; though not to the same extent (Oregon has 35 players on NFL rosters while Virginia Tech has 31).
I do realize players on NFL rosters doesn't correspond directly to current talent level but it does give an idea of how a program does in acquiring talent. Anyway it's an interesting matchup. What people say is that what really makes the SEC tough are the defensive fronts. It'll be interesting to see if Georgia's D line can dominate and disrupt Boise State's offense.

Re: Boise State vs. Georgia
It will be interesting to watch, that's for sure. I used to be a big Georgia fan, and I remember the shalacking in 2005 we gave Boise. We were up 34-0 at one point. With that being said, Boise is coached by a different coach and its program has grown in leaps and bounds in the last 5 years alone. There's definitely more talent there than there was in 2005. Georgia, on the other hand, has somewhat taken a dive. I think they have enough talent to be a very special team, but at the same time whether it be coaching or something else they don't seem to fulfill that potential that they have. I think this first game is more important to Georgia than it is Boise, simply because Boise can still win the MWC if they lose but Georgia needs the confidence to win the SEC and beating a legit team will certainly boost that confidence. Boise is a legit team, they've done nothing but win the last few years, and for one game they can beat any team in the country IMO

I'm rooting for Georgia, a program with actual integrity. Watch how Boise State plays sometime. As a neutral, aside from their play-calling fetish, I fail to see how you could root for them in good conscience. THUGS, I tell you.

Should be an interesting game, Boise loses some playmakers at WR but they still have the RB Martin and of course Moore is still running the offense. Right now I'd say Bosie by 14.

Boise should win this one pretty handily. For once, I'd like to see Boise State involved in a kickoff classic type game in the Mountain/Pacific time zone. Right now they have to travel way back east to play in front of what might as well be a home crowd for the opponent. That said, the Broncos are a better team than Georgia.. Richt is on the hot seat.

Re: Boise State vs. Georgia
I think Boise is going to come out and tear it up. They always pick a game or 2 and do some unique things that they normally don't do. I think the 2 games BSU does that for this year are Georgia and TCU. They may go through the motions on some other games this year but they will come out and play hard and break out some new plays for Georgia and TCU. I'm gonna take BSU at +14 right now even with this being a home game for Georgia. People in Boise will find cliffs to jump off if they loose this game............then again maybe I could get some tickets this year if they did

Your Midwest bias is getting to you. Let's not forget. This UGA team almost beat UCF last year.

They have a pretty good receiver from my high school alma mater who should make some noise this year.tampajag wrote:Should be an interesting game, Boise loses some playmakers at WR but they still have the RB Martin and of course Moore is still running the offense. Right now I'd say Bosie by 14.

I'd love to see Boise smack UGA and be relevant in the BCS chase the entire season.

Don't get me wrong. I love Mark Richt. He's a class guy and his cameo in the movie Facing the Giants was classic. But I believe Boise is going to win this game going away. That running back Martin is nearly unstoppable.

Other than playing a "name" team in UGa, this game doesn't have the big time feel like last years VaTech game.

Re: Boise State vs. Georgia
That's because Georgia had a rough year last year. But Georgia is still a program that has had 26 players drafted over the past 5 years to Boise State's 10. Another thing that should be interesting is to see if Georgia's SEC defensive line dominates the line of scrimmage. They had problems there last year but supposedly they have two stud nose guards to play in their 3 -4 this year. Last year they were playing a guy who was a big recruit but he's really a defensive end and that's where he's going to be this year.tampajag wrote:Other than playing a "name" team in UGa, this game doesn't have the big time feel like last years VaTech game.
Very little doubt Georgia's going to have far better athletes overall.
And honestly think about Virginia Tech last year. They lost the next week to James Madison. They won the ACC but then they got just absolutely pistol whipped by Stanford in their bowl game. You have to ask yourself how last year's Virginia Tech team would've done in the SEC. Probably not real well.

Re: Boise State vs. Georgia
The whole issue though is that Georgia is in the SEC, and SEC loyalists think that Boise State can't compete week-in and week-out in that league. A 70-point thumping ala USC 2004-2005 would quiet the SEC crowd for at least 20 months (or days).
I'm surprised we haven't seen more about Jacksonville State beating an SEC team. That's huge IMO.
By the way, players in Georgia are talking about this being a national championship run. They say why not cause Auburn (their rival) won it last year.

Re: Boise State vs. Georgia
USC in its mid 2000s heyday was a completely different animal than Boise State. They had one team where 10 players were drafted off the defense in one year. There are 60 USC players on NFL rosters right now. USC dominated SEC teams when they played them. The whole issue though is that Georgia is in the SEC, and SEC loyalists think that Boise State can't compete week-in and week-out in that league. A 70-point thumping ala USC 2004-2005 would quiet the SEC crowd for at least 20 months (or days).
Boise State has 18 players on NFL rosters right now. The Broncos have never beaten a SEC team. Now they're playing one that was middle of the SEC pack last year but should be improved.
Anyway, it's very reasonable to believe Boise State with the talent level it's had could not compete in a league like the SEC...or the PAC 10 for that matter...week in and week out and end up with a record such that people would be talking about them being ranked near the top of FBS. In the SEC Boise State would have a below the conference average overall talent level. Absolutely no doubt about it. In fact they'd be near the bottom.
There's a big difference between getting all hyped up to play one or maybe two BCS league teams per year and going through something like a SEC schedule.

BTW guys, I live in SEC territory. My son graduated from LSU. I'm kind of an SEC fan. And even I get irritated at times by how arrogant SEC fans are.
BUT...
The SEC has 7 0f the 13 BCS championships. No other league has more than two. The SEC has never lost in a BCS championship game.
The SEC has the largest number of players in the NFL of any college league and the largest average number of players per team in the NFL.
The SEC has by far the best record in BCS bowl games.
And for power ratings people: I'm not going to look it up right now but I know from looking at it in the past that there is no doubt that power ratings have the SEC as the best conference over time during the BCS era.
It's the toughest conference.
Boise State may beat Georgia in this one game. Maybe. But Boise State has yet to have a team that would have any shot at all of winning a SEC championship. None. Zero. Nada. They simply haven't had the players.

I live in SEC territory as well, hell I was born in Baton Rouge. That doesn't change the fact that since these two are only playing ONE game that Boise will win it. That's all that matters. UCF only had to play Georgia ONCE and they beat them.JohnStOnge wrote:BTW guys, I live in SEC territory. My son graduated from LSU. I'm kind of an SEC fan. Re: Boise State vs. Georgia
Sorry, but Boise State is going to get manhandled. I am very much not looking forward to hearing UGA fans crow about how good they think they are after they stomp a mudhole in Boise. At least they will get a reality check the next week against USC.
Also, I despise the BCS, but making a paper tiger out of BSU will not do any good for the cause. Why exactly are they a preseason top 10, anyways? Because they lost their best receivers? Because they lost to a Nevada team that barely beat a mediocre ACC team in a bowl game? Because the best team they beat last year lost to an FCS team that didn't even make the playoffs and got destroyed by Stanford? Because four years ago they beat an Oklahoma team notorious for choking in big games? East coast bias? What is it about them?
