Tennessee’s Summitt has early onset dementia

Post by dbackjon »

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with early onset dementia.

In a statement from Summitt released by the university on Tuesday the Hall of Fame coach says she plans to coach the Lady Vols during the 2011-12 season, but may have some “limitations.” She said that she went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in May.

The Knoxville News Sentinel first reported Summitt’s condition.

The 59-year-old Summitt told the newspaper she plans to rely on medication and mental exercises to manage the progressive condition that could lead to Alzheimer’s. She planned to meet with the Lady Volunteers on Tuesday afternoon to inform them of the diagnosis.

Apparently her dementia is worse than previously thought, as she's obviously forgotten that the news was already printed in the Knoxville News Sentinel today and her team already knows.

If she meets with them on Wednesday and then again on Thursday we'll know for sure.
