Brandon Roy forced into medical retirement

Post by rkwittem »

This is just too bad for Portland and their fans. One year, you have a guy who is the Western Conference's only answer to Kobe, a legitimate superstar in the making, and the guy primed to the backcourt version of Bill Walton for the Blazers and suddenly his body fails him. :(
Now they're facing an uphill climb and left where they were pre-Roy....back in the lottery again.

It really is sad for Roy. Doctors reportedly said that if he were to have kept playing, he would have been unable to walk in future.

Not necessarily. Last year Roy played in only 47 games and even those games, he was not the consistently explosive player he once was, and we still gave Dallas a strong run in our playoff series. Matthews will step into the starting rotation as he was when Roy didn't play. Batum had a strong showing in the offseason in the Euro League in France (his coach there played Batum at the 2 quite a bit). We'll leave the lottery for teams that reside there, like the Timberwolves.

Other Blazer news, Oden is not expected back at all this season and Aldridge is out 1-2 weeks with a reoccurance of his heart ailment from his rookie season.

No Oden or Roy + Aldridge as the best player + Felton/Wallace/Batum/Matthews as the only other reliable pros + unproven youngsters on the bench = likely lottery visit. That's best for Portland, long-term. :twocents:
