MVFC Week 11 Thread

Post by BisoNation »

Quieter week in the Valley this weekend with Illinois State, Indiana State, and Southern Illinois all having byes, but a big game in Fargo for sure.

Northern Iowa @ South Dakota
South Dakota is terrible, UNI wins.

Youngstown State @ Western Illinois
Still not sure what happened to those little Penguins, I'll take WIU.

GAME OF THE WEEK

#16 South Dakota State @ #1 North Dakota State

All eyes around the MVFC and the country will be on what happens in Fargo this weekend. While NDSU has solidified a playoff spot no matter what happens the last 2 weeks, the Bison must win this weekend in order to win the Valley championship. If the Bison win this weekend, and lose at Illinois State, the Redbirds and Bison would be tied for the championship with Ill St holding the tie breaker. If the Bison win out, they are the Valley champs, and if South Dakota State wins out they are the Valley champs. SDSU is not guaranteed a playoff spot yet, but with their last game against South Dakota, there is no doubt they should finish with 8 wins and be in the playoffs. With all the possible scenarios out of the way, this game is going to feature two prolific defenses and some very potent running games. As always, the Bison defense will come to play, but they’ll be taking on the nation’s #2 rusher in Zach Zenner so don’t expect a shutout. If the Bison offense is as sluggish as it has been, this will be a similar game to Indiana State, Southern Illinois, and Missouri State for us. I look for a special teams or defensive touchdown to give the Bison the edge this weekend. The Dakota Marker stays in Fargo.
The strength of the herd is the bison and the strength of the bison is the herd.

Looks like BisoNation is the lone holdout keeping this thing from being unanimous. What gives, BN?

Looking forward to watching Zenner play and if the Bison defense can contain him.

Two good defenses. It will be a battle.

Well YSU hosts Indiana State next week at Stambaugh. Does the winner of this game make the playoffs, thus knocking the other team out!?

If Indiana State wins they are in IMO.

A 7-4 YSU team I think is out of it. The 4 game losing streak was a killer.

I do know that a 7-4 YSU team was to host JMU in the play in round last year, but we blew it against MSU.

Not saying a 7-4 record with wins over Pitt, Albany, and Indiana State is worthy to get in, but it will be enough to qualify.

Our athletic director Strollo is on the selection committee, take that for what it is worth.

And clenz, school and the election consumed my time in October. I still went to the games and watched the away games live in yton.

Outside of the top seeds, hosting is determined by $$$ (bid amounts and travel costs) more than records.
And while 7-4 (all Div. I) is enough to not DISqualify a team, it doesn't mean automatic qualification. Just look at Illinois State last year, who didn't make the playoffs despite a 7-4 record.

According to the official guidelines, if a committee-member's own school is being discussed, that member has to step out of the room for that discussion. That's not to say they don't still have some degree of influence, but still.

I really don't know if a 7-4 YSU team would make it in this year. Maybe, maybe not. Would depend on how the rest of the field/bubble teams look, I suppose.

7-4 won't make the playoffs this year for YSU...just too many other good teams.

I posted this on PN just now in a playoff discussion thread that was talking about the XDSU's and the ISU's...not YSU....
NDSU, SDSU, ISUr...assuming neither SDSU (plays host to USD) or ISUr (by getting blown out by NDSU) screw up this week.

ISUr is on the bubble pretty hard right now with Colgate stealing the Patriot AQ from Lehigh, who is likely to be an AL team at 10-1....
Stony Brook lost as well yesterday, to Liberty, likely giving Coastal Carolina the AQ from the Big South...meaning a 8-2 (played D2 game) Stony Brook team who spent the entire season in the top 15 takes an AL spot as well.

With those two losses yesterday, the chances of more than three MVFC teams making it is almost zero and the chances of three making it is less than 25%

YSU has zero shot at the playoffs right now.

YSU isn't getting...that isn't bias that is fact right now.

That would mean 4 or 5 teams are getting in....with YSU being behind all of them in the standings.... including behind a team that won't be eligible for the playoffs due to tie breakers.

If "chalk" wins out this week, minus the YSU game that puts the standings at

NDSU 7-1 (10-1)
SDSU 6-2 (8-3)
ISUr 5-3 (8-3)
ISUb 5-3 (7-4)
SIU 5-3 (6-5)
YSU 4-4 (7-4)

Say what you want about me being "biased"...even though you are clearly more biased than I am in this whole thing (and in general when it comes to FCS football)....They aren't going to take a 7-4 team that finished 6th in their conference. ESPECIALLY now that Stony Brook and Lehigh lost their AQ spots in their conferences and are likely still to get ALs at 8-3 and 10-1 respectively.

The only potential 7-4 team with a playoff-credible resume right now is Sac State....
