The extremely rookie-laden Sacramento Sirens roster apparently only needed two weeks to adjust to the rigors of football. After surrendering their home field to the Central Cal War Angels (Fresno) a fortnight ago, the Sirens took it to the Women's Football Alliance defending champion San Diego Surge at Rio Linda High School 40-18 last night. The bulk of the damage was done in the second half as the first half was a titanic defensive struggle that ended 6-6 following a pair of long touchdown runs.
It appeared that the second half would go the way of the first, as the Sirens were only able to up the score to 13-12 in the second quarter. However, the loss of Surge championship game MVP RB/DB Cassey Brick to injury and a number of other important veterans to retirement began to tell in the second half as the Sirens running game began to gash the Surge defense for huge gainers, on sweeps, outside option plays, and fullback dives. Sac FB Kristy "Bubba" Milanese was key in the fourth quarter in eating up chunks of clock, and RB/FS Holly Peterson got huge runs outside off of option action out of the Sirens' Fly and Wing-T sets. The Surge's third touchdown didn't come until there was less than a minute remaining in the game.
This brings the Sirens record to 2-1 on the young season. (The opening 24-6 loss to Central Cal and a forfeit win). The Sirens are in second place in the three-team American Conference Division 12 behind 3-0 Central Cal. The defending champs drop to 3-1; they came into this game with lopsided wins against the Pacific Warriors (28-8), West Coast Lightning (51-0), and the Arizona Assassins (69-6). San Diego leads the five-team American Conference Division 13. Next up for the Sirens is a road game against the Nevada Storm in Sparks, NV, which could well be SH's only road trip of the season. The Surge have a return game against the West Coast Lightning (2-1-1 following a no-score tie against the Pacific Warriors).
