Sirens improve to 3-1

Post by SuperHornet »

The Sacramento Sirens won big on the road in Sparks, NV, last night, taking down the Nevada Storm of the IWFL 61-8 last night in an inter-league matchup of rookie-laden teams.

I arrived at halftime, partly due to getting out of a track meet late (I was unexpectedly asked to run the tail end of the F/S girls pole vault right at the end; one girl didn't even bother to come in until after everyone else was out; she broke the meet record with nobody left in the stands) and partly because Nevada's website hasn't been updated in over a year, thus directing me to their OLD field at a multi-field facility devoted to youth baseball that had a soccer field with NO seats marked for football but without goal posts, clear across town from Sparks High (where the game was played). A call to the team owner got me directions that allowed me to arrive at the half with the Sirens up 34-0.

The game was more of the same from last week, only with more play from backup QB Holly Peterson (she's apparently splitting time with starter Alexis Vierra). The two-person option game has turned into a thing of beauty, a level of perfection that I haven't seen since the Oklahoma/Nebraska heyday of the mid-'80s, and the outside option play is being complemented VERY well with dives from fullback Kristy "Bubba" Milanese, who has been gashing defenses up the middle quite a bit of late. The Sirens defense shut down Nevada's passing game with first half pick-sixes, which caused the Storm to abandon that in the second half at a time when moving the ball down the field through the air would have been beneficial. Unfortunately, it was defensive lapses on one third-quarter drive that led to Nevada's only touchdown.

The Sirens head to Seattle next week for a WFA game against their old nemesis, the Seattle Majestics, perhaps the only team in the West besides the Central Cal War Angels of Fresno who will give Sac a fight. The next Sirens home game is 25 MAY against Nevada.
