lists about 70 or so of the I-AA HC contracts. Some of them aren't current (ended 2015 or prior). Looking at the top 10 in terms of Guaranteed (could have added up someone's figures wrong). 5 CAA of top 11 are CAA. Brock (UD) would probably be in the top 10 if were published)..Looks like JMU was #3 in 2014 & 2015 with Withers behind Farley & Rocco.

I disagree in that I think McNeese does qualify as a "traditional I-AA power" in spite of its recent playoff problems. It's tied for fourth among current FCS programs in terms of playoff appearances with 16 (#1 Montana has 24) and it's been to the national title game twice (Northern Iowa's been once). And if you include all programs that have ever been in I-AA/FCS it's still tied for 6th. It's had winning seasons in 23 of the past 25 years. It's got winning head to head records historically against Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Youngstown State, and Delaware. And it's got a 0.500 historical record against Montana. It's not absolute top tier. But I think it does qualify as a "traditional I-AA power."

And it's WAY down there in terms of what it pays its head coach as well as in terms of athletic program budget overall.

I see that was Viator's old contract for the 12'-14' seasons. I see it was only 119.5k base, 135.5k guaranteed (10k annual premium benefit + 6k annual car) + up to 19.5k bonus potential.

Yeah, that would have to be the one of the lowest for a power program, even for 2012-2014. I assume he was getting higher for 2015? What is the new coach getting?

Don't know but McNeese is notoriously low budget. It's athletic budget is second smallest among the 8 public schools in the Southland (don't know the private school budgets) ahead of only Nichols State. Sad thing is that its program generates by far the most revenue from ticket sales and contributions among Southland schools. But McNeese gets very little subsidy.

For example: Sam Houston State's athletic department revenues were $14.9 million in 2014 while McNeese's were $10.9 million. But McNeese had $1.2 million in ticket sales and $1.6 in contributions while Sam Houston State had a paltry $0.5 million in ticket sales $1.1 million in contributions.

But Sam Houston State got $10.6 million in subsidies (student fees, funds kicked in by the school) while McNeese only got $5.1 million. Sam Houston State got $7.8 million from student fees alone while McNeese only charged its students $0.6 million from that source.

Some McNeese fans want McNeese to charge the students more. I'm against that. I never have believed in charging the students fees to support the athletic department. I don't think a school should be forcing people who aren't interested in the athletic department pay for it; especially when the cost of college is getting as high as it is. So I like that McNeese doesn't rape its students like some other schools do. But it does put them at a disadvantage financially within the Southland.

$175k for Sears + a car allowance. Can earn up to $40k if hell freezes over and the Hornets win the BSC, get into the playoffs, and win the FCS title.

Gets $5k a year for hitting an APR of 940 or higher, and can make money on the football camps and media deals.

Keeler was getting $350K ten years ago. I hope Brock doesn't make that much. $200K would be a crime with the results he's had, but he says inthe article he left a $275K assistant job at Rutgers, so I assume he's getting $300K+.

Like you said, Delaware goes to great pains to hide such info behind its private/public hybrid shield.

With then he must have gotten a pay cut, because 7 years ago he was Keeler getting 310k:

"..CAA head football coach salaries (fiscal year 2009) from The Review, an independent student newspaper of the University of Delaware
1. K.C. Keeler, Delaware, $310,662
2. Mickey Matthews, James Madison, $248,000
3. Sean McDonnell, New Hampshire, $183,000
4. Jimmye Laycock, William & Mary, $179,400
5. Rob Ambrose, Towson, $169,200
6. Jack Cosgrove, Maine, $155,000.."
http://www.virginia-informer.com/archives/308" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It shows 248k for Mickey, but Mickey's base was 222k when he was canned from JMU after the 2013 season, so the 248k shwoing in 2009 must have been total with all incentives/bonuses, so I'm assuming the totals for everyone else also included all incentives & bonuses..

Found out Rocco's recent. Someone posted this on JMU board. Made $437,672 in 2013. Info. obtained from IRS Form 990 made public by the school. That would be total- base + additional guarantees + team performance bonus (athletic & academic). And they dnp the playoffs that year. I bet he was upper 400s 15' with the playoff run.. I guess the base then would be pushing 400K. Probably make him the highest paid in the nation.

I can't verify it as I haven't seen the guy's W-2 but the number I hear for Brock by well-placed sources is in the $375K neighborhood. If they don't see the playoffs this year there will be a new HC come December.

Withers had 325k base. Adding up the guarantees (12k for vehicle) and performance incentives (960 team APR and making playoffs) looks like he hit about 389k. If he had won a playoff game the way I read it would have topped 400k..

The hiring article said Brock was around 300k (which was probably referring to the base). But if he did make around 375 I think the base would have to be higher. He certainly couldn't be hitting any on the field bonuses..Sounds like he migbt be the 2nd highest paid in the CAA behind Rocoo. 3rd at worse behind Rocco & Ambrose..

If a I-AA HC is making low 300s or higher in guaranteed $$, barring the instItution being highly a ademic or having shitty facilities (like Maine or UNH (with old stadium) IMHOP he should be making a watered down 24 team playooff field most seasons and winning some playoff games..

Bottom line here on UD is that I don't know what the coaches make, BDKJMU doesn't know what the coaches make, and the Review doesn't know what the coaches make. UD only has to respond to a FOIA (or whatever similar mechanism is in place) if they feel like it, and they usually don't. Probably the only people who can get a real answer are Delaware lawmakers, if they're lucky and ask UD nicely.

Yea I never liked UD could hide behind crap like this. What I find even more amazing (and infuriatingly sad) is UD ranked dead last in FCS in passing last season, but has yet to find one QB or WR recruit or transfer... :( :( :o :o   :? :? :x :x           :ohno: :ohno: :suspicious: :suspicious: :tothehand: :tothehand: :dunce: :dunce:

Ironically Houston's 1st assistant hire- Bob Trott, UR's DC. What I don't get if Rocco was being paid so much, looks like by far highest in CAA, then presumably his assistants had to be up there in pay. Wonder how JMU then pried Trott away from UR..I doubt could have offered that much more than UR was paying, even if there was an assistant or associate HC tag..

.....Additional benefits in Houston’s memorandum include a car stipend of “not less than $1,000 a month,” and a discretionary fund of “not less than $10,000 a year.”

Houston will owe Madison $350,000 if he terminates his contract prior to Jan. 31, 2018. If Houston opts to leave the school sometime between Feb. 1, 2018 and Jan. 31, 2019, he owes Madison $250,000. If he terminates his contract any time after that, Houston would owe JMU a $150,000 buyout..."
