Here's a report from the day before the election on a poll estimating how Trump would've done vs. Obama:

If you're wondering, that poll had Clinton up by 3 percentage points over Trump in the popular vote. She beat him by 2.1 percentage points in the popular vote. If you want to think Trump could win in the electoral college while losing by something like 12 percentage point in the popular vote, go ahead. The result: Obama would clobber Trump and Romney would trounce Clinton.
Obama can’t run for a third term, but if he could he’d beat Trump by 12 percentage points, 53 percent to 41 percent, according to the poll. Romney would defeat Clinton by 10 percentage points.
This bears upon a problem for the "right" with Trump winning. They are interpreting it as a repudiation of the policies of the "left." It's not that. It's a unique situation in which the opposing candidate was under FBI investigation for much of the election, etc., etc. Note the part of the quote above saying that Romney would've beaten Clinton much worse than Trump did.
