Kayaking, Hiking > Oil and Gas

Post by kalm »

Yes, we still need oil and gas. Kayaks are of course a petroleum based product and I need fuel to travel to flyfishing destinations. Still, this at least illustrates the importance of preserving public lands. Last time I checked, we didn't go to war over the strategic supply of hiking trails or Sage grouse. The government hasn't been handing over massive tax breaks and subsidies to REI.

Analysis of outdoor recreation industry finds its contribution to GDP larger than that of oil, gas extraction
UPDATED: Fri., Feb. 23, 2018, 4:30 p.m.

A federal government analysis of the outdoor recreation’s economic impact reaffirms what many conservation groups have said for decades. Outdoor recreation is a big business.

For the first time ever the U.S. Department of Commerce looked specifically at the economic impact of outdoor recreation. The analysis was published last week.

The analysis found that outdoor recreation contributed $373.7 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product in 2016, comprising 2 percent of GDP. In fact, the outdoor recreation industry’s contribution to GDP was larger than that of all mining, including the extraction of oil and gas.

And the industry is expanding. In 2016, it grew 3.8 percent, compared to the overall economy’s growth of 2.8 percent.

The report was released by U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis on Feb. 14

Can’t disagree. This just puts some numbers on the “sustainability” economic model. We should be able to do both.

"That analysis found that outdoor recreation resulted in $21.6 billion dollars in annual expenditures in Washington and created roughly 200,000 jobs. The Washington study was the first of its kind in the state."

Similar to West Virginia. Recreation employs 2x as many as coal.

Just curious Kalm and Skelly, do coal and recreation co-exist within reason?

One, coal is only half the equation in WV. Coal production while still greater than natural gas in WV, has shrunk greatly, while oil & natural gas is extraction is increasing thanks to fracking.
Secondly, the energy sector jobs pay more than the recreation jobs. Problem is there isn't enough of them (although coal jobs in WV actually increased by a double digit percentage this past year).
"energy is more than 17 percent of gross domestic product, or GDP, but just 4 or 5 percent of employment"
https://www.marketplace.org/2016/05/09/ ... ts-problem

With a WV GDP of about 73 billion in 2016, that would mean those energy was about 12+ billion in WV's economy.
Recreation about 9 billion in spending in WV according to the Outdoor Industry Assoc
https://outdoorindustry.org/advocacy/

They both have their place & can coexist. Heck, I bet the majority of the people in WV who work in the coal, oil & natural gas industries also do outdoor recreation activities (along with voting for Trump)..

I googled it after I posted. Some of them did use wood. But there were others who lived in places where there aren't any trees. They stretched skins over whale bone.
