That's easy. Just throw the effing baby in a pond. If he walks back to you, then the mother is excused.
And you have your next Seal recruit.

Check your capitalization, GFSIU.

A SEAL is a Sea, Air, and Land Sailor.

Seal is married to Heidi Klum.

LOL.

According to the newspaper I have sitting in front of me about a local guy that is one of the SEALS charged...

They're being charged with dereliction of duty, making false statements, impeding and investigation, etc.

Seems to me that their problems are more about lying and covering up the assault more than the assault. And those arguing the charges should be dropped are essentially arguing that lying, dereliction of duty, etc. aren't a big deal and should be ignored. I'm not a vet. I didn't serve in the military... but, I think the military has standards in regards to honor and personal conduct that should be enforced. If the SEALS lied, covered up their act, etc. they deserve any punishment they get, imo.

Wouldn't that be SALS? I guess if they were called the Navy SALS nobody would join.

Every time someone mentions anything in reference to a seal my response is always...No, that's just a little ice cream!

I am sure there are 2 sides to this one, we won't get the whole story and the media wouldn't report the whole story if they could get it. If they really lied and covered something up, they will be in trouble and rightly so. The court martial will sort it out, I'm not worried about that part myself. The thing I worry about is putting unrealistic expectations on the soldiers when we put them in harms way. Expecting them to be all nicey nice to a piece of trash like that is unrealistic in my mind. They are not on the home front and a peace officer in one of our own neighborhoods. They are in a combat zone and the people they are after are worse than trash. I am not justifying them not telling it like it is/was in a report, just wondering why it was an issue to begin with. If all the guy had was a busted lip and it was my guys that brought him in, I'd have put them in for a humanitarian of the year award instead of writing them up. There wouldn't have been a paper trail of a problem to begin with I guess. That is what I don't get about this whole story, it just doesn't sound like they did much to the guy and it shouldn't have been questioned to begin with.

Agreed.

I can tell you from experience that it is not easy to change gears from killing mode to nicey nice mode. Anyone who has had the misfortune of having to kill another human being knows this. Anyone who says different hasn't been in that position.

We can enforce rules that reflect general human decency and honor, but when you start going after busted lips and black eyes in a war zone you are setting yourself up for accusations of selective enforcement, because there is no way you can control it all.

I think back to the story of Easy Co. 101st PIR in the Normandy invasion. Sgt. Joe Toye carried brass knuckles with him, and used them on a German or two. He never used them anyone who was trying to kill him, rather, he used them on Germans who had either surrendered or tried to surrender. He had no fear of being jammed for it, because it just wasn't a big deal. Nobody was all that concerned with the feelings of the enemy. We dehumanized them and then we fought them like animals. That is what it takes to win.

Thank God there was no CNN or NYT back then or we'd be under the Kraut heel to this day.

That's why I think it's best to let the military handle internal stuff like this. I was never in the military, but I agree that most civilians don't know what they are talking about when trying to judge a situation like this.

Taking into account your WWII story and the increased pressure on the US when dealing with incidental civilian casualties - do you think it is even possible to "win" a war in the Middle East, or anywhere for that matter?

Not the way we are fighting the current wars.

That is why I have always felt that unless we are prepared to kill every single motherfvcker out there, we had better not fight at all. The last time we truly whipped somebody's ass so badly that they knew they were beaten an subsequently capitulated was the Japanese. Since then we haven't had the political will to win a goddamn backgammon match.
