This would just exacerbate one of the current problems, imo.

It would make it all but impossible for an unknown, non-career politician to get elected. He/she would have no name recognition and would never be able to establish a campaign against a more well-known candidate.

Why? The EC disenfranchises minority party voters in solid blue or red states. Every conservative in California, New York, Washington, or the Northeast knows their vote is a waste of time. Similarly for liberals in Texas, Montana, or the deep south. Our presidential elections have come down to the likes of Ohio, Virgina, Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Wisconsin and a few others. Is that REALLY the group you want electing our presidents?
Maybe not my first choice, but better than having the likes of wack job central (Arizona, Texas, Utah, Montana..) doing the selecting. :coffee:

Point missed, as usual. Donks in solidly red states are just as disenfranchised as conks in solidly blue states. I wonder, if every vote actually DID count, what our voter turnout would be.

Do you think people would feel more empowered if their one vote could be the difference between 4 more years and a new president?

Still mad about Al Gore not getting to be President after winning the popular vote? :mrgreen:

I have no idea. I just know that lots of people don't vote because they feel their vote is wasted in their particular state.

Hell, I feel that way but I don't vote strictly R or D. I can appreciate the concern and am always in favor of correcting our process. What was good in 1787 might not necessarily be relevant today, that's understandable.

Cutting out pension credits for Congress, Administration & Court System in any year with a Federal deficit unless overridden by a public referendum;
Expanding the time and ease of voting, but restricting voting to one for per qualified, identified citizen;

Line item veto;
Eliminate deductions for campaign contributions;

There are A LOT more than Presidential elections... :lol:

Maybe the original post was talking only about Presidential elections... and, if so... I misread it. But, I read it to be about the political system generally.

Unknown, non-career politicians are elected to state and local offices all the time. Even a lot of them are elected to the U.S. Senate and House.
