can you name a "religion of peace"..?

Scientology is the closest thing going today - any others..?
Well, at least we agree on Chomsky.

...probably Buddhists, too.

Go ahead. Try and tell me that Christianity is not a religion of peace because of the Inquisition and War of the Roses and such.

Not the Crusades, because I will slam that back down your throat. Islam invited the Crusades by using the sword to conquer. Some Christian kings and emperors have done the same thing, but on a much smaller scale. The difference is that Islam is innately violent and aggressive by design. The episodes of brutality under Christian kings and emperors have been violent despite the design of the religion.

Your propositions usually compare some flawed system you wish to criticize against some unattainable perfect utopian system. Not good enough to make the case.

Are you willing to acknowledge your real blind spot on religion, that the historical non-religious dictators and conquerors have been worse than the religious regimes you love to criticize?

At least you are not (yet) saying that all religions are alike.
First of all you're over reacting...
I do not "love to criticize" religion - in fact it does not often cross my mind... but I also see no reason to protect organized religions or pretend they are something they aren't

And yes - it's a violent world - humans kill each other every single day - some as dictators some as Bishops some as kings some as holy men some as army men... who cares

Islam in many ways is "just another religion"
in many way's it's actually fairly unique but in no way is it all good or all evil - these threads where we try to demonize one belief system over another is tedious...

However:
Until each man alone has an individual relationship with the God of his understanding - one man - one religion - to each his own... until then, this world will never know peace - 6 billion individuals 6 billion one man religious armies... anything else is doomed to fail (as it has been for 6000 years)

So Christians never committed atrocities in the name of God?
Sure they did. They had slaves like the muslims, too. That's not enough to justify your comparison.

There are profound and distinct differences between Islam and Christianity above and beyond the 700 year difference in the years of societal development.

Christians breathe oxygen just as do muslims, nazis, birds and Bahais. That fact does not justify a conclusion that the only differences between the groups are the stages of societal development.

You're right, I was exaggerating for effect. :thumb: But, from my point of view, they're not that much different because I think they're both BS. You'll obviously disagree with that, and that's fine. I just don't think it's fair to label all Christians as forces of good in the world and all Muslims as evil.
That's not to say that anyone on this forum does that on a regular basis, but I do get that vibe sometimes. :twocents:

1. It is also important to recognize that, on balance, religions have done more good than harm.
2. I care. It is important to measure the effects. Measure the dead bodies, for example. All results are not the same.
3. Points taken, sort of, but not a justification to stick one's head in the sand. 4. Interesting assertion but you have not made a case for it. Lots of successes mixed in with the failures.

Points taken. I agree with some of what you have written, but if you think Christianity and Islam are both BS, what do you propose as the alternative? Modern progressivism? Every time man places himself above God, we get something worse - Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, etc... even the French Revolution!

Even though your gay nudie pic that I protested was not a personal attack, it had no relevance to the thread. Post it in a new thread in the locker area.

The Matthew Shepherd remark was a direct and uncalled for attack on my gay colleagues in this blogspot. I do not approve of their chosen lifestyle, but I spent 25 years risking my life to defend their rights to be as stupid as they wish to be - preferrably in the privacy of their own bedroom.

I think the Shepherd remark crossed a line and I would be a fvcking coward if I did not stand up for them. Please feel free to disagree.

Have you actually looked at the numbers, Jon? The humanists make the religionists look like pikers. The most authoritative and comprehensive source available is Rummel at the University of Hawaii. Google "Rummel" and "democide," take two aspirin, and call me in the morning.

Of course the "Ancien Regime" had deep flaws which required correction, but French secular humanism proved worse and did not have to be the answer.

The American Revolution provided a far superior answer. You can argue that many of the American Revolutionary deists were also humanists, but the fact remains that the Biblical Christianity of most of the founders and citizenry engendered a responsible citizenry, social harmony and political stability, with which the religious humanists were obviously comfortable.

For this reason the American Revolution grounded in faith compares favorably to the French Revolution based on secular humanism.

Just a twist on that, one of my favorite quotes...

When asked by a sports reporter if his option offense would be successful at the I-A level. Paul Johnson responded by saying, "If you like a lot of passing and not much scoring, watch soccer."
