Build more small "towns". My county has a hearing tonight where they are talking about removing zoning in residential areas. If this were to pass, my next door neighbor could sell her house to a builder that can put up a small apartment building. I live in a single family neighborhood. I would burn the place down.

Re: Miami Apartment Building Collapse
My town, at a town hall meetings 4 months ago, said they made a huge mistake allowing a massive development to occur. Now they're trying to retain any small town charm they can.89Hen wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 8:19 amBuild more small "towns". I personally like that idea and see the possibilities, but doesn’t that also open the door to more sprawl, fuel usage, or need for mass transit? I know Spokane County is constantly dealing with the state’s growth management act. And we have room out here.89Hen wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 8:19 amBuild more small "towns". Fewer people will need to go to offices going forward and along with the "towns" are mixed use, so you can have your offices near home.

The original railroads plotted towns as they were built.kalm wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 11:16 amI personally like that idea and see the possibilities, but doesn’t that also open the door to more sprawl, fuel usage, or need for mass transit? Too long ago. Rail works best in really concentrated spaces. We just have too much room and the desire for people to have space. Building a lot more rail now, in places where it doesn't exist, makes almost no sense, especially when we also are saying that more and more people don't need to go into offices to work. It's great that people like the rail system in Europe or in parts of Japan, but those demographics and distribution of people aren't the same here and aren't going to be.
Even makes less sense to devote any money to new rail not only for the work at home reason, but for the coming advent of automated cars. We can get to the "Minority Report" transportation where basically every individual car is it's own train.

There is more than just commuting. Our old hood is developing fast and services (everything from grocery to medical to parks) is lagging behind. There’s also the issues of who controls utilities, city annexation vs. unincorporated county services, etc. everyone wants the services, for cheap, and the cities and pols are fighting over control and votes.GannonFan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 1:07 pmToo long ago. Complicated issues but I agree there are some things that will take care of themselves through tech. Not sure if that prevents sprawl as much as we’d like tho.

Assuming that sprawl is something to avoid - maybe some people like everything (and everyone) being spread out.kalm wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 3:00 pmThere is more than just commuting. It took time, but passenger railway infrastructure has really benefitted Virginia: https://www.washingtonpost.com/transpor ... nger-rail/GannonFan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 1:07 pmToo long ago. Not saying it'll work in every state, but Virginia can serve as a model for some. 80% of its citizens have easy access to rail now.

I"m not saying we should build rail systems, I'm saying we had it all and replaced it with other stuff. Twin Cities had a great rail system, then Carl Pohlad, yes the former Twins owner, came along and changed it to a bus system. Now everyone wants rails back.GannonFan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 1:07 pmToo long ago. Rail works best in really concentrated spaces.
