Other "experts" say the # of cases is being vastly underreported because it's impact is so mild.

Same with seasonal flu numbers (I don't think we keep a tally of 'confirmed seasonal flu' cases. We just estimate it).

Check your state Department of Health for Flu statistics. They actually have labs test for the flu to determine if it is type A or B and I believe the testing is mandatory.

Therefore, the stats should be pretty solid.

Agreed, unless you're an elderly person who regularly sees a doctor (or for most many doctors) or a child who's parent gets nervous and brings them in, the vast majority of people never get tested for the flu so all of it is model-based guesswork. Fairly accurate, given what they're working with, but there's a pretty hefty +/- error bar in that work.

The thing is, we should do anything to contain and eradicate the virus (including quarantines and closures). I agree that mass hysteria isn't necessary, but it's disingenuous to simply brush it off and go on as if this isn't a big deal.

We have a new virus which kills vulnerable people and if we allow it to become a part of our lives (even if it proves to have a smaller mortality rate than influenza), that's still a large number of unnecessary economic and social damage for generations to come.

It'll take a worldwide effort, but we should take it seriously. Let's try not to have influenza and Covid-19 every year.

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today announced that a Montana resident visiting Anne Arundel County has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). While this will be classified as a Montana case, the Maryland and Anne Arundel County Health Departments will take the lead on the investigation.

This individual is a woman in her 70s who was alerted that she had been in close contact with a confirmed case. The patient presented for testing at an Anne Arundel County hospital, which took all necessary precautions to protect staff and patients.
