Re: Coronavirus COVID-19
Bingo. I don't know how well mask wearing caught on state-wide of nation-wide, but everyone in my neck of the woods is almost always wearing one around stores. So based on this anecdotal observation, the Sacramento area shouldn't be seeing another wave of cases nor should we be ratcheting up to a more strict tier if wearing a mask significantly effective in combating the spread.
Of course this "wave" could also just be the seasonal flu kicking in with the typical hysterics from the msm.
BTW CA 7 day death average is down to 42.

If you look at the case count graphs in both America and the globe, you see one thing jump off the page. ALL our actions, masks, sheltering in place, washing hands, social distancing, etc., etc., have barely put a DENT in the overall rate of growth of the spread of the virus. Essentially, “virus gonna virus”....and yet here we are, many states about to make the same mistakes over again that were made in May/June/July....we literally learned NOTHING from the first go-round.Winterborn wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 10:13 amIn a couple of years looking back at this, my feeling is that the data will bear this out. Hard to make that call - heck, this could be what "slowing the spread" looks like. Maybe the move to being outside less that coincides with the change in seasons is what's driving this increase and it would be even worse if people weren't wearing masks, distancing, washing, etc. We want to blame all these nameless people for not wearing masks and disregarding theirs and other's safety and health (and in politics that means the left are blaming the Trumpers and the right are blaming the protestors and Biden victory celebrants) but the reality could also be that these measures may only be effective to a point. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants.

Mask up at home in PA.
Masks are now required indoors wherever people from different households are gathered — even if they are physically distant, the state health secretary, Dr. Rachel Levine, said Tuesday. The order applies to every indoor facility, including in private homes, but Levine acknowledged that officials are relying on voluntary compliance rather than on enforcement.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese that created the virus, are also propagandizing that the protocol doesn't work thru social media. People obviously believe it doesn't work, just by all the active cases, and all the people I'm seeing in large groups at football games, protest, riots, etc.AZGrizFan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 4:50 pmIf you look at the case count graphs in both America and the globe, you see one thing jump off the page. PA has done a lot of dumb things over the past year. If Wolf wasn't already in his last term this probably would've done him in anyway. 2022 is an election year for governor in PA so should be a pretty contested one (same year that Toomey's vacating Senate seat is up for election too - busy year).Ibanez wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 6:25 amNo. That's stupid. So what would the infection, hospitalization, long term symptoms, and death rates have been without lockdowns?AZGrizFan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 4:50 pmIf you look at the case count graphs in both America and the globe, you see one thing jump off the page. Re: Coronavirus COVID-19
That's great for your town, but many restaurants barely make money when there are no lockdowns. Cut your revenue in half, it doesn't take an economist to figure out the numbers don't work. I got a call from a guy who owns a restaurant on the Eastern Shore of MD and there was nothing I could do to help him with a mortgage. His 2020 YTD was showing a loss. He's trying to stay open, but it's doubtful. Not sure why your town is immune.
https://www.travelandleisure.com/food-d ... -shutdowns
Now, six months after the first shutdown, one in six restaurants — or a total of 100,000 establishments nationwide — have “closed either permanently or long-term,” according to a new survey the association released on Sept. 14.

Re: Coronavirus COVID-19
Danish study on mask effectiveness.
Abstract
Background:
Observational evidence suggests that mask wearing mitigates transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It is uncertain if this observed association arises through protection of uninfected wearers (protective effect), via reduced transmission from infected mask wearers (source control), or both.
Objective:
To assess whether recommending surgical mask use outside the home reduces wearers' risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection in a setting where masks were uncommon and not among recommended public health measures.
Design:
Randomized controlled trial (DANMASK-19 [Danish Study to Assess Face Masks for the Protection Against COVID-19 Infection]). (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04337541)
Setting:
Denmark, April and May 2020.
Participants:
Adults spending more than 3 hours per day outside the home without occupational mask use.
Intervention:
Encouragement to follow social distancing measures for coronavirus disease 2019, plus either no mask recommendation or a recommendation to wear a mask when outside the home among other persons together with a supply of 50 surgical masks and instructions for proper use.
Measurements:
The primary outcome was SARS-CoV-2 infection in the mask wearer at 1 month by antibody testing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), or hospital diagnosis. The secondary outcome was PCR positivity for other respiratory viruses.
Results:
A total of 3030 participants were randomly assigned to the recommendation to wear masks, and 2994 were assigned to control; 4862 completed the study. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 occurred in 42 participants recommended masks (1.8%) and 53 control participants (2.1%). The between-group difference was −0.3 percentage point (95% CI, −1.2 to 0.4 percentage point; P = 0.38) (odds ratio, 0.82 [CI, 0.54 to 1.23]; P = 0.33). Multiple imputation accounting for loss to follow-up yielded similar results. Although the difference observed was not statistically significant, the 95% CIs are compatible with a 46% reduction to a 23% increase in infection.
Limitation:
Inconclusive results, missing data, variable adherence, patient-reported findings on home tests, no blinding, and no assessment of whether masks could decrease disease transmission from mask wearers to others.
Conclusion:
The recommendation to wear surgical masks to supplement other public health measures did not reduce the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate among wearers by more than 50% in a community with modest infection rates, some degree of social distancing, and uncommon general mask use. The data were compatible with lesser degrees of self-protection.
