The game Republicans play to make voting more difficult to protect "the integrity of the system"
has been - and always will be - a distant second to just keeping people from voting in general

I just liked the authors sassy toneCID1990 wrote:I watched the video (instead of taking the author's word for it)
I agree with McConnell. We have enough Hatch Act violations around the workplace in the Fed government as it is without paying us to go shill at the polls.
BTW Federal workers have a VERY HIGH voter turnout rate ... in spite of not getting the day off. Somehow we all manage to do our civic duty on work days because it really isn't that hard to take a few hours off. Just take 12 less coffee breaks or lay off Candy Crush for just one day and its easy.

I remember going through a GQ reading phase in my 20's. There were actually some pretty damned good articles and authors like PJ O'rourke. You must read a lot of Luke Darby, Baldy?Baldy wrote:GQChizzang wrote:"Mitch McConnell Admits He’s Against High Voter Turnout Because He Suspects People Will Vote for Democrats"

Even CID jokes about it on here all the time.
The Federal bureaucracy is 80%+ Donk, so it's no surprise that the Donks in Congress want to give them the day off with pay. No wonder McConnell is mocking the idea.![]()
Elections just aren't Luke Darby thing. He needs to stick to subjects more in his wheelhouse like Cardi B, Lady GaGa, and the Spice Girls.

Not sure. But I would be interested in knowing what would happen if all states split their EC votes based on percentage of election votes. That may flush out the hopeless D's in R states and the hopeless R's in D states.CID1990 wrote:Actually.. I’m not sold on the notion that if we had 100% voter turnout that it would benefit the Democrats in the long run.
Australia has compulsory voting and suddenly theyre shifting right.
Nothing like actual pie in the sky government in practice to wake people up. That’s why I wouldn’t be averse to about a decade of complete Dem control
Just long enough for them to start locking people up for offensive social media posts

Most likely not - most private industries don't follow a lot of the federal holidays already, just the biggies like New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Anything else are floating holidays (unless a big enough manufacturing site where they tell people when shutdowns are and vacations get taken then).kalm wrote:
Question: If it became a federal holiday, wouldn't many private industries follow suit?

I understand, and Rolling Stone used to be a publication about music. Lots of things change in 20+ years.kalm wrote:I remember going through a GQ reading phase in my 20's. The irony of McConnell being against it is only matched by the irony of all those people voting establishment Dem so that the Corey Bookers and Chuck Shumers of the world can pretend they're actually liberal.

Oh thank goodness we have you here to clear that up for us...Baldy wrote:I understand, and Rolling Stone used to be a publication about music. Lots of things change in 20+ years.kalm wrote:

I've never heard of the guy until I saw that article, but looking at his bibliography shows that he likes him some Cardi B, GaGa, etc, and a pretty staunch proponent of boilerplate 'progressive' blather. In other words, he knows a lot about nothing.

RS was reporting on politics from the start. Ever heard of some dude named Hunter S. Something or other?Baldy wrote:I understand, and Rolling Stone used to be a publication about music. Lots of things change in 20+ years.kalm wrote:

Because some guy he doesn't know or respect is making entertaining and sarcastic observations about it...Grizalltheway wrote:Not sure why Baldy is so triggered by this. He and others here have made it abundantly clear that universal suffrage is not ideal.

Age can be decided by the states as long as it doesn't exceed the Constitution.
Then make federal elections a week-long affair.
I meant that we should give people an entire week to cast their ballot.Ibanez wrote:![]()
I like how the Brits have a short campaign season. Let's start there.
I agree with felons, if you've finished your sentence then you can vote.
I'm not sure how I feel about people non-citizens voting, like someone on a student visa.

I guess you're going to have to say what "rule" means to you.89Hen wrote:∞∞∞ wrote:I say go further: let anyone vote in federal elections...be it legal aliens, felons, etc. Make it a true democratic representation of the People under our government's rule.If you are not here legally, you are not under US rule.
BTW, I do agree that felons, once they've served their sentence, should be eligible. If you did the time, you did the time.

Why? Isn't that what absentee ballot voting is for? In ND you have 40 days to vote absentee. And you can even fill out the application to vote absentee online, it gets mailed to an address of your choice and you can mail it back. There is even no postage due. The application takes about 5 minutes to fill out and the official paper copy about the same.∞∞∞ wrote: I meant that we should give people an entire week to cast their ballot.
I can agree that non-resident aliens (like students) shouldn't be able to vote, but I think resident aliens working should be able to have a voice in the government (and they did for most US history).
As for felons, I meant all felons - included incarcerated ones. And speaking of felons, we should also work on making slavery unconstitutional.

See, and just when we maybe find some common ground, you have to move further to the extreme.∞∞∞ wrote:As for felons, I meant all felons - included incarcerated ones.

You do realize that true voter fraud, on a mass scale existed in the time frame you're referencing?∞∞∞ wrote:I meant that we should give people an entire week to cast their ballot.Ibanez wrote:![]()

It's the progtard way apparently. Have you not been paying attention to all the leftist candidates "out lefting" each other?89Hen wrote:See, and just when we maybe find some common ground, you have to move further to the extreme.∞∞∞ wrote:As for felons, I meant all felons - included incarcerated ones.
