http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Scienc ... 711&page=1Scientists say a 47-million-year-old fossil found in Germany may be a key link to explain the evolution of early primates, and, ultimately, modern human beings. The fossil is being unveiled Tuesday at a news conference at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
The fossil, of a young female that probably resembled a modern-day lemur, is described as "the most complete primate fossil ever found." It is small -- with a body about the size of a raccoon -- but it has characteristics found in later primates and in humans.
"This specimen is like finding the lost ark for archeologists," said Dr. Jorn Hurum of the University of Oslo, who led the two-year effort to determine the fossil's importance. "This fossil will probably be the one that will be pictured in all textbooks for the next 100 years."
The fossil was being unveiled today amid great fanfare at a news conference at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The scientists who worked on it nicknamed it "Ida."
It has, among other things, opposable thumbs, similar to humans' and unlike those found on other modern mammals. It has fingernails instead of claws. And by examining the structure of its hind legs (one of which is partly missing), scientists say they can see evidence of evolutionary changes that would eventually lead to primates standing upright.

Some of the comments in the Discovery thread on Facebook. I mean, what do you say to this kind of thing? I just sighed and moved on.
I will believe evolution when someone shows me a monkey that can talk, read, write novels, solve difficult problems etc. ...and until then, I'm stickin' to my Religion and my guns. Sometimes these Discovery people go overboard...like alot.
um... we did not evolve from... we were a creation of God... not interested...
I would hate to think that I have an ancester like this or anything similar. If we came from monkey's and Apes, why do I go to the Zoo and still see monkeys and Apes. Maybe if we could find one in the in between stage instead on the early stage it would be credible. This is far to crazy and dumb to have any belief.
Booo!!! This is the dark side of Discovery! The THEORY of evolution stinks! How can one believe this stuff! Just because we have similar traits.

I hate it when people say "if we evolved from monkeys why am I driving and they are in zoo's?
From what I understand is that the theory of evolution states that the human came off of a line of monkeys. The humans split from the monkeys, while the monkeys continued to be monkeys. I hate ignorant people

Clenz, hate to break the news to you, but christianity is complete bullshit. It's one of thousands of myths used by primitive man to explain shit like tornados, dreams and death. It stuck because early governments found it to be a useful tool to control people.clenz wrote:I believe in a combination of evolution and creationism.Mountaineer wrote:Some of the comments in the Discovery thread on Facebook. As people became wiser, christianity became less powerful. Now it's no different than the Elks Club - nothing but a social club and a complete waste of time.
You're young. Don't waste time in churches and all that shit. Boy, you should be out bird-doggin chicks and bangin beaver!

Not everyone that is religious is Christian. You spend hours bashing Christianity, but yet you leave out Judaism and Islam...both religions have the same God as Christianity. You also leave you

I like that part (above) Dude..
keep that central and you will have an amazing life...
I was Atheist all through my 20's and into my 30's and it was what worked for me... it kept me focused on science and searching for the truth - ultimately it was just what I needed.
Later in life (I'm old) as I was doing some difficult research and seriously applying myself and my beliefs I discovered a few things along the way (which I will not get into here) but suffice to say "I found God" and I wasn't even looking. Now I don't want to get all mushy here so I'll throw this out there too...
I discovered a long time ago that I have no patients for "the Bible"
it's an ancient text written by men - to control men... (Period)
It's got some nice stuff in it that has value in general... but it's a tool - like a hammer - it pounds nails for an organization - I ain't into that at all...
Nuff Said: I like God - The Universe is a stunning example of Master Work... and it has nothing to do with "the Bible" or Christianity in my world
