Cam appears to be safe for now. He undergoes surgery next week on his left foot.
I think Cam and RGIII have effectively demonstrated that the read option is nit sustainable at the NFL level. The QB is going to get hurt eventually, and then start wearing flamboyant hats.

These are strange days for the NFL...
We've got a few scrambling - sideways throwing - hip hoppin' - game changers
and they are flipping the QB script upside down in the NFL

at precisely the same moment
Tom Brady is looking awful standing there like a bundt cake bouncing passes through the midfield

Change she is coming our way

Profound words from my brother:
"As much as everybody has announced that the Patriots broke the Rams code - and they did
The Rams broke the Patriots code on offense in the same game"

both teams have averaged 10.5 fewer points a game (since that game)
both defensive designs in the Superbowl broke those offenses

The Rams were not the only offense that got "exposed" that day
everybody was shown the proper schemes to shut them down

Absolutely Michael Vic and Randall Cunningham were the prototypes
but GM's weren't scouring the collage ranks looking for another Michael Vic

Today they are...
even last year there were four QB's selected before Lamar Jackson
which seems like a mistake that will not happen again

Of course there are still a lot of teams that like pocket passers, but c'mon man...

Donovan McNabb
Cam Newton
Vince Young
RG3
Kordell Stewart
Shaun King
Duante Culpepper

Maybe the game has changed that now there are some more successful ones, but these QB's have been there for years. The Skins sold the farm to move up to get RG3. I guess they were just ahead of their time.

So use them like RB - draft them, use them for the 5 years of rookie contract, then let them go.

The success is because it is a position that the defense usually does not account for.
But even a big body like Cam Newton can't take the punishment for too long.

Also, add Teddy Bridgewater to the list.

To the list of what..?
We're talking about QB's that can rush for 75 yds and throw for 300 a game

Half of the previous list isn't even close
Dante Culpepper exhibit A averaged 41.2 rushing attempts per SEASON
So he rushed about 3 times a game

I'm talking about QB's that weaponize their legs for positive yardage more often than they should. Regardless of yardage.

I'm not a fan of QBs with legs better than their head/arm combo. Unless you do it by plan as dback mentioned. Go into it knowing you will not get longevity from that QB and draft accordingly.

Also, add Tyrod Taylor and Tim Tebow to the list. :kisswink:

Honestly at this point the only reason I want them to win games is to keep the Eagles from winning the division.

So the worst full-season division winner in NFL history was the 2010 Seahawks at 7-9.

The NFC East still has a chance to set the record this season. Everybody just needs to lose out except the Eagles beating or tying the Cowboys in the week 16 game.

I wouldn't put them in that category. I see them as pass-first QB's with scrambling ability. I would put Mayfield and Mahomes in that category too. Josh Allen is not afraid to run. I don't think he is as skittish as a Tyrod Taylor in the pocket, but he does run a lot. Maybe too much.

Obviously, the line between running QBs and scrambling QBs is very thin. It comes down to whether the runs are designed, at least as an option, or if the QB abandons the pass too early.

So if you had to create categories, a first trial might be:
1. Pocket passers with limited ability to run. Would rather throw it away than take a hit for a 3 yard gain.
2. Passers that are pass-first but have the ability to move in the pocket and create time for play to develop. Will run safely if it is open.
3. QBs that have good running skills and will abandon the pass after quick reads.
4. QBs that run by design.

Examples:
1. Marino, Montana, Rypien, Roethlisberger, Brady, P. Manning, E. Manning, Rivers, Kelly, Warner, Aikman, Flacco, Goff, Ryan, Stafford, Cousins
2. Theisman, Rodgers, Brees, Farve, Mayfield, Luck, Wilson, Elway, S. Young, Romo, Mahomes
3. Vick, Taylor, Kaepernick, Newton, McNabb, Josh Allen, V. Young, McNair
4. Newton, Tebow, Jackson

Meh, this is off the top of my head as I remember them. Some could arguably be moved up or down a category.
