Re: WORLD CUP 2010
I brushed it aside as easily as you brushed aside the worst showing ever by Europe into the quarterfinal round - never had Europe gotten so few teams into the quarterfinals as they did this year. That speaks a lot to the depth of that federation and when that federation has the lionshare of entrants that says quite a lot.Grizalltheway wrote:Did you just not read the paragraph I quoted at all?GannonFan wrote:
Eh, still doesn't change my opinion that Europe gets too many teams into the tournament. And what a difference a round makes here. Only having 3 European teams make the quarterfinals was one of the worst showing by Europe in decades, but now all of a sudden because those 3 European teams make the semis this is supposed to herald some era of European dominance? Please, that is bunk. Spain, Germany, and the Dutch looking good (especially the last two, who are actually two favorites of mine) doesn't erase the debacle that was France, that was Italy, that was England, that was Greece, and so on and so on. When Brazil was the only South American team dominating past tournaments it didn't mean the whole continent was good. And if Europe gets someone the title this time (and I'm rooting for that Dutch/German final) that doesn't hide the fact that many of the giants of Europe looked particularly average in this tournament, like they do whenever they need to leave the home continent.I'm not sure how you can brush aside the fact that only TWICE in the last 40 years has Europe had fewer than three teams in the semis. Okay, South America had all of their teams make it to the knockout round. How have they fared since?

Nonsense - everyone knew Maine didn't deserve to be there, even CAA people. We can't be blamed for obvious selection flaws like that.89Hen wrote:*cough* Maine 14 *cough* UNI 40 *cough*GannonFan wrote:

3-1 as Orange Crush pours it on (just in case that last goal really was offsides) - looks like I might need to decide on dressing the boys in Orange on Sunday or going with the black and white for Germany - decisions, decisions.

Re: WORLD CUP 2010
Damn - 1-0 Spain right now, 78th minute. Germany hasn't looked the same without Mueller, just adding more fuel to my burning hatred of the stupid yellow/red card system in soccer. Guy gets 2 yellows over the course of 2 separate games and he has to sit out the 3rd. Again, way too much ability for a ref to impact a game, including an upcoming game he's not even part of. On the bright side, I'll be able to root hard for the Dutch without any reservation on Sunday now.

Damn, I was really hoping for my Dutch to do the honors, but I suppose as long as the Krauts lose.
