Pope Francis hits another HOME RUN..!!!
Pope Francis Calls for Ending Tax-Exempt Status of Churches That Don’t Help the Needy!!!!
Pope Francis blasted religious institutions who are exploiting tax loopholes to make money
instead of helping the needy...
In an interview the Pope discussed the need for Christians to fight the temptation of the ‘God of money’, into which many religious institutions often fall. He then called out those institutions that have opted to enter into the hospitality industry while exploiting a legal loophole to keep from paying taxes on their business enterprise operating under the guise of doing “God’s work.

Isn't that cute...the Pope is a little jealous of those other religions out there that are taking his potential profits.
Most of what churches do is not helping the needy. In fact, most of what any church does is to help enable the stupid.
Cripes, we have smart people starting churches and schools in order to avoid playing taxes. Why in God's name should a church or school be tax exempt? What if you are preaching and teaching crap...and who delineates what is crap or not?
Tax them all...on everything.

I didn't debate legal precedent. That's why I lumped you in with the courts. Reading more slowly and thinking things completely through are your friends.CID1990 wrote:kalm wrote:

Hopefully I'm not the only guy enjoying the bounty that is the CS.Com Poly Board...
From Cluck to Andy (Both completely legit points) but 180 out of phase
Also: We've got kalm and CID doing what they do
which is run a successful side thread in the middle of the actual thread
Awaiting:
Seattlegriz adding something completely irrelevant about evolution

That established, the Catholics do some great work but the reality is only a very small percentage of their revenues actually help those in need.

For some that's true. Second reading this past Sunday...D1B wrote:It's people like you, conks, who claim to but actually don't follow the values of Jesus, who are a disgrace.
What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear
and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them,
“Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, ”
but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it?
So also faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.
Indeed someone might say,
“You have faith and I have works.”
Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.

You're a decent and charitable person who truly feels compassion for the poor. That's a fact.89Hen wrote:For some that's true. Second reading this past Sunday...D1B wrote:It's people like you, conks, who claim to but actually don't follow the values of Jesus, who are a disgrace.

What doesn't make sense is your support of a political party that does little else but vilify and marginalized the poor.

Like all man gods, he's a myth - invented, but that doesn't mean some of the things attributed to him are meaningless. Specifically and most important - his love of the poor. This has always been my position.
The church lost its way for 2000 years (it never really was decent until it was challenged by reason) and finally they now have a pope who gets it.

To some others, some loony moonbat 18 year old hippie is more needy than a withered veteran on the street corner.
One thing is clear...everywhere these church folks go they are trying to convert others to their beliefs. In other words, the people they are helping are not just, "needy," they also need to find salvation. So, helping the needy is really a sales job first and foremost..recruitment for future church people. That is an advertising/hiring expense and should be taxed.
Look, we keep hearing that we have loads of people in this country that are needy. At the same time, churches are full of cash and land. Why not tax the churches (land and all) and the money the churches pull in?
As far as non-profits in general, in the end, non-profit institutions, ALL OF THEM, try to hide as much money from the government (in other words, from we the people) as possible. There are billion s of dollars out there going towards some person's, or group of people's, pet project(s). That money should be taxed and the money should be spent on things we all agree on.

Agree. Just note that the Catholic Church is not as interested in conversion as the fundies. Pope Francis is a lot like the Jesuits I had in college: extremely smart; engaging; authorities on matters of science, economics, arts, and politics. Moreover, the Jesuits I knew were committed to education and activism, and saw the mission of the Church as one rooted in social justice.
A theology professor I had, Fr. John Baldovin, use to say all the time, "I like John Paul II, don't get me wrong, but just wait until there is a Jesuit pope." I actually never expected a Jesuit pope, but I always knew the day was coming when the leadership of the Church would see its mission as one rooted in social justice.
