We've knda been doing that since Sykes Picot 1917
I fail to see why we should be happy about Russia not only supporting, but basically fighting the war for the dictator we, America, says absolutely has to be out of power to have any chance for stability and peace in the region. And then, on top of that, have Russia come in, and on day 1, blast the crap out of the guys that we've been financially and operationally supporting for the past year and our basic response to them erradicating the guys we think are the good guys is "hey, come on, stop that!".
Russia's economic fortunes are not going to ebb or flow based on their coming to the rescue of Assad - it's not really going to take that much. However, Putin's own support, both at home and in the parts of the world that are coming around to liking him and the power he provides, are on the uptick. Russia may be screwed by the fortunes of oil, but that doesn't mean they will crumble like the USSR did.
Why shouldn't we be happy?
We should not have been in the in the first place.
It is comical that we tell the world that we don't like a leader, that he has to be removed, and then we provide guns, training, on the ground military support, air support, and ammunition to his opponents (the ones trying to kill him). Same thing we did in Libya...how'd that turn out?
We continue to prop up a creep in Afghanistan (they just lost control of a major city to the supposedly defeated Taliban...how does that happen again), and just recently supported the brutal and deadly crushing of a democratic protest in Bahrain, and evicted a democratically elected President of Egypt, and we're supporting a Saudi attack on Yemen...the same Saudis that kill women for all sorts of what they call unacceptable behavior...all while decrying the bad boy Assad.
This refugee crisis is almost entirely our fault. Certainly the Libyan refugees are directly the fault of Europe and Obama because they decided to use purposely false and trumped up information (that Ghaddafi was executing civilians and turning places into bloodbaths of the innocent...which turned out to be wildly untrue - WMD's Part Deux) to turn Libya into a shitpile worse than Iraq. Follow that up with a similar strategy regarding Syria, and we have displaced over a million people, and killed hundreds of thousands people, simply because we didn't like a couple of country's leaders.
No one can seriously defend our actions with a straight face while protesting the Russian actions.
