BTW

I could draw a number of parallels

Nazi Germany wasn't just about hating Jews and fascism

it was also about blind allegiance, populist politicians feeding peoples fears, low information voters, disillusionment with proto-globalism...

just because we aren't smashing Jewish storefronts doesn't mean its impossible for societies to mirror a lot of what led Germany down that road. just because it is a clumsy cliche doesnt automatically mean there's no truth

I probably wouldnt use the same analogy - but at the same time there are lots of stupid things the current president has said (if I had a son he'd look like Trayvon) that I wouldnt say, either...

Carson isnt my candidate but I do think the reaction he produces in you is amusing - that alone makes him interesting

Seriously. Think about it. Why would you want to give the final word to people who have zero accountability?

It makes no sense at all.

Yes that says many things including this:
The judiciary, on the contrary, has no influence over either the sword or the purse; no direction either of the strength or of the wealth of the society; and can take no active resolution whatever. It may truly be said to have neither FORCE nor WILL, but merely judgment; and must ultimately depend upon the aid of the executive arm even for the efficacy of its judgments.
What that tells you is that a necessary check on the Judiciary is that the executive can simply ignore what the Judiciary says and refuse to enforce it. That's the intended protection from Judicial over reach.

We need Presidents who are willing to exercise that check. It wouldn't help us right at this moment because of the President we have.

But the idea is that the Judiciary is supposed to be the LEAST powerful branch. And that's not the case right now.

BTW Federalist 78 presumes that the Justices are going to follow the Constitution. The problem we have now is that they clearly don't. We have to deal with that.

Hamilton assumed the judicial branch would be the weakest of the 3 branches.

He assumed that they would have judgement and no power over the "sword or the purse."

It was a political essay. It was essentially propaganda. So, consider that.

"What you were doing is allowing words to affect you more than listening to what was actually being said. And that's part of the problem," he said.

"You are just focusing on the words 'Nazi Germany' and completely missing the point of what is being said," he added."

The point (that you missed)? :suspicious:

"Carson made the comments during a March interview with conservative news outlet Breitbart.com. He noted that the Third Reich was "using its tools to intimidate the population," and said that "we now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe."

In elaborating on those comments Wednesday, he again suggested that the U.S. "government is using instruments of government, like the IRS, to punish its opponents."'

He sounds like a lot of scientists that believe in God.

You're up in arms about his beliefs (and your stance on them is legitimate)

But what should really be alarming is that as things work themselves out in the primaries, he may wind up being the best candidate from either side. Chew on that for a moment-

I'll be totally honest - I'm less enthusiastic about this field than I have been with any before- but three things that matter to me are integrity, civility, and a sense of humility. There are two democrats and one republican I see that may fit the bill - Jim Webb, Bernie Sanders, and Carson. I personally don't care if the president believes in flying monkeys with laser rifles. If his beliefs are subordinate to the Constitution then I have no objection to him being president- which was the original thrust of this thread... Will Carson submit to the same litmus test that he would expect of a Muslim? If the answer to that is yes, then his faith is irrelevant.

Herman "9-9-9" Cain was a clown who withdrew from the 2012 race because of sexual harassment charges. The only real comparison to Carson is their outsider status. Carson may sink, but it won't be for lack of intellect, sensibility or a moral core.

GOP's Carson goes after Muslim advocacy group's tax status

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Ben Carson has started a petition calling on the IRS to target the nation's largest Muslim advocacy group.

The retired neurosurgeon accused the Council on American-Islamic Relations on Thursday of violating its nonprofit tax status in a Facebook message. Carson said the organization "brazenly violated IRS rules" when it called last month for him to leave the 2016 presidential race.

"Under the Obama administration, the IRS has systematically targeted conservative nonprofit groups for politically motivated audits and harassment," Carson wrote. "The agency should now properly do its job and punish the real violators of America's laws and regulations."
