Washington State double dips 25% / 25%
The certified growers when selling to the stores - the transaction is taxed 25%
and then
When the Store sells it to the customer (end user) that transaction is taxed at 25%

King County is doing a study with undercover agents
to determine the underground marijuana market in Washington
The findings will certainly be interesting

It'll happen, same as 'shine around here. But most people will take the easy, and less risky, route when buying their weed.

Wrong. Tax the piss out of it and people will go black market in high #s. Wa Po article from early 2014 using 2012 #s:
"Want to make an easy $25,000? All you need is a car and willingness to smuggle cigarettes across state lines.

Inter-state cigarette smuggling is a lucrative business — one that underscores how differences among state taxes can produce multi-billion dollar side-effects. An average car can transport about 10 cases of cigarettes, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Load up with 10 cases in Virginia, home to the second-lowest state excise tax which comes out to $180 per case, and drive up to New York, home to the highest at $2,610 per case, and voila more than $24,300 in profit."

"The lucrative business of cigarette smuggling

Wanna make a quick $1,944,000? Buy a truckload of cigarettes in Virginia and sell them in New York.
Yeah, it's illegal. But that's how much can be made from selling a tractor trailer's worth (that's 800 cases, each holding 600 packs of cigarettes) of low-tax Virginia cigarettes in high-tax New York, based on estimates from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

And that's exactly what criminals are doing.

In 2011, more than 60% of all cigarettes sold in New York were smuggled in from another state, according to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a free-market think tank. That's up from about 36% in 2006.
It's not just happening in New York. Mackinac says 15 states have smuggling rates that top 20%. Add in counterfeit cigarettes from overseas, and ATF estimates the lost government revenue at more than $5 billion a year.

Mackinac and others pin the blame on rising state taxes...."
http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/16/news/ec ... index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In NYC, pack cigarette taxes $4.35 state, $1.50 city tax, (on top of $1.01 fed excise tax), +8.5% sales tax, upwards of $8 in taxes on a pack that will cost you around $12+ out the door..Why would people pay that when they can pay far less black market?

Yep. Pot is more comparable to tobacco, and the black market for smuggled cigarettes in high tax states is huge..

So you think people are hauling truckloads of out of state Marijuana into Washington state and selling it..?

First:
Who are they selling it to because they can't sell it to state authorized re-sellers
One re-seller in Kirkland already turned in a guy who approached them with 5 pounds of marijuana
He's going to do 20 years in the big house

Why did they turn him in - you might ask - because the legal re-sellers want a clean system to operate in

So again: Who do they sell to..?
The average guy on the street doesn't want to do time getting caught in a sting - why do that..?
when he can just walk into any number of Marijuana stores
and buy whatever he wan'ts perfectly legally

and the difference between drug cartel prices per ounce and legal prices today is $30 dollars
an ounce is anywhere from $150 to $220 right now
Street price was $120 to $200

I don't think you guys have done your homework
For reference - an ounce of Medium High Quality Marijuana in Atlanta has a street value of $250

:coffee: The Drug Cartels like a higher tax rate than Washington State does

Last time I bought pot in Montana (I think it was 2010) it was like 50 bucks for an eighth. I believe that works out to 400 bucks an ounce. :o

Even after the decline, that’s still 50 percent more than the $10 a gram available on the black market, board officials said in an interview yesterday at Bloomberg’s offices in Seattle.
http://time.com/money/3830017/legal-pot-cheap-prices/
Legal marijuana prices in Washington are not cheaper than the black market, at least not yet... This may seem surprising. After all, black market operators do business under the table. They aren’t taxed or subject to the costly regulations of legal growers and vendors.
http://mynorthwest.com/11/2782593/Black ... road-block
At the moment, the majority of Washington pot smokers are sticking to their old habits. For the ones who have been using marijuana illegally for years, making the switch to legal pot requires serious dedication.

Marijuana smokers need to pay significantly more and they need to drive to one of the 161 legal pot stores across the state, which are generally restricted to areas outside of main, accessible shopping districts. That leaves a thriving black market — legal marijuana's biggest road block.

They will continue to support Drug Cartels as their "best option"

Lets assume that 89 and BDK are right.

How much did Washington State get in tax money prior to legalization? Did demand suddenly skyrocket? Not likely. ;)

The articles posted prove my point... Thanks Hen

The unregulated Medical Marijuana market is where the customers in question are buying the pot
As stated CLEARLY in the article

Not in a dark alley behind the Mini Mart
but over the counter Medical Pot shops

"An effective tax rate of 44 percent on recreational pot is keeping many buyers in the still-unregulated market for medical marijuana.."
