I didn't care who won last night. I've always liked Pittsburgh and the Pirates (the Steelers and Penguins can go blow each other though), and who can honestly root against the Cubs.

Arrietta is a beast of a pitcher, gonna be nearly impossible to beat him. Cubs are 14-0 in his last 14 starts and 18-1 in his last 19!

Does Epstein get credit for building this team, like he did the BoSox a decade-ish ago?

Kinda funny, I asked Mrs89 who she was rooting for and she said "The Pirates, I guess." When I reminded her that those same people in the stands were Penguins fans, she changed her mind.

Epstein (turns out) really is the smartest guy in the room...
His work with the Cubs - since day one - has been sublime

When he took over they were horrid on the field and bereft of talent coming up...

Meh.
It is easier to turn over a roster with a wad of cash to get a few years of success, than it is to build a long run successful team. Epstein turned over the roster in Boston and had a nice run, but he left a bankrupt farm system and they haven't seen the playoffs since (4 years). He made some bad moves that caused the dropoff to be more pronounced than it should have been (a combined 67 games back the last 4 years).

He may be better than most, but not by much. The nature of building, and replenishing, a roster for a long run is hard on everyone.

Yeah but they cheated.

Now that I looked it up, that was a fluke year. The year before they finished 26 GB and the year after they finished 25 GB. But yeah, I screwed that up.

And who was that loss to?

Of course the phillies!

Fun fact: Arrieta hasn't given up more than 2 runs in a game since that loss. (July 25th)

In other words, the man is ballin. :notworthy:

Meanwhile, the away teams won both ALDS games yesterday.
All the Ivy League needs to become relevant again is to diversify its OOC schedule.

Chase Utley with one of the dirtiest plays I have seen. He should be ejected from the series, runner at first called out on interference, and run should not count.

if at any point he even touched second base (no homo) during that play
I would be forced to disagree with you

But he never even made an effort to touch the bag
He just went right at the shortstop

He's appealing the penalty and they won't hear it until at least after tonight's game - Utley eligible to play tonight.

If I'm the Dodgers, I definitely pinch hit him sometime tonight. Figure the Mets will throw at him, and Utley's been hit like a million times in his MLB career so even if he gets beaned he likely trots down to first base - he should be an automatic baserunner and he may get the opposing pitcher tossed in the meantime.

Because we are in the playoffs, he will not be thrown at unless the game is out of hand.

He is fighting a two game suspension for what he did.
