Big Sky: Holy Crap!
What the hell happened today? I start my routine check the scores process looking at the conferences in alphabetical order and look at the Big Sky. WTF? Is Southern Utah going to win that conference? Northern Colorado beats Portland State? WHAT? WTF is THAT?
And Eastern Washington gets knocked off by NAU?
OMGosh what a weird day in that conference.
And Eastern Washington gets knocked off by NAU?
OMGosh what a weird day in that conference.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
Deep Purple: No One Came
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Re: Big Sky: Holy Crap!
Compared to 5 or 6 years ago, the conference is way better from the bottom up. Another example is 1 - win Davis beating NAU earlier in the season. Even the teams vying for the cellar have noticeably more quality athletes so you better bring it each week.
Right now, the only team that has done that is SUU.

Right, but it should be said that SUU has managed to avoid playing any of the Big Sky teams that currently have playoff hopes.kalm wrote:Compared to 5 or 6 years ago, the conference is way better from the bottom up. Yep. But they've at least dominated through that stretch. The closest call was yesterday and they still won by 11.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Right, but it should be said that SUU has managed to avoid playing any of the Big Sky teams that currently have playoff hopes.kalm wrote:Compared to 5 or 6 years ago, the conference is way better from the bottom up. I'm going to straight up invoke the transitive rule. SUU destroyed noco, which beat PSu yesterday. And spanked Weber who beat Montana, and they killed Davis who beat NaU earlier. So there ya go...
I know, I know... That means literally jack squat until they play head to head. But I have to say I like their chances from here on out. I just wish we had psu at home...

And as a PSU homer, I will point out that after the Vikings last loss this season, they went out and beat a bad FBS team 66-7 the next weekend.Thundernuts wrote:Mvemjsunpx wrote:

Can you guys give your current thoughts as to the potential contenders for the Big Sky title and who you think makes the playoffs from the Big Sky. I know this weekend proved nothing is certain, but how many teams still have a shot at the playoffs?

EWU might get in at 7-4 but that would be on the heels of a 3 game losing streak. Unless we show some offense again, we might be done.
Montana is in at 7-4 with a home game against EWU and @ the reeling cats
UND is in at 7-4 with an FBS win over Wyoming and a road win at PSU. They finish hosting UNC (not a guaranteed win but favored) and on the road at Poly. The one thing UND has been good at is stopping the run.
NAU wins out against Sac and @ SUU and they are in are a lock at 8-3. At 7-4 they are hurting with their only quality win against EWU. The Jacks and Tbirds are the two hottest teams in the conference.
UNC still has slim hopes if they win out at 7-4. They'd have a win against PSU but only 6 DI wins with a play down game so they'd need serious help.

Re: Big Sky: Holy Crap!
yep, looking forward to the game, and when they're not playing us, I can't help but cheer for utah boy Kuresa while he's playing qb for PSU. He was amazing during his years at mountain crest high school, and seems to be doing well at the college level. This could be the game of year for the bsc!JALMOND wrote:And as a PSU homer, I will point out that after the Vikings last loss this season, they went out and beat a bad FBS team 66-7 the next weekend.Thundernuts wrote:

Interesting at the beginning of the year it seemed the Brawl of the Wild would decide the conference champ. Then it seemed for awhile that it was going to be the Dam Cup. Now it seems like the Grand Canyon Trophy winner will be the champion.TribePride wrote:Can you guys give your current thoughts as to the potential contenders for the Big Sky title and who you think makes the playoffs from the Big Sky. Um, I don't think NAU's too likely to win the auto bid even if they beat Suutah.JALMOND wrote:Interesting at the beginning of the year it seemed the Brawl of the Wild would decide the conference champ. Re: Big Sky: Holy Crap!
NAU wins out, PSU wins out and whoever wins between EWU and UM, NAU, PSU, SUU and the EWU/UM winner would all be at 6-2, provided the Griz can beat the Cats. If the Griz beat EWU, then loses to MSU, then NAU, PSU and SUU are all at the top at 6-2.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Um, I don't think NAU's too likely to win the auto bid even if they beat Suutah.JALMOND wrote:

Huh? Cal Poly dominated SUU in almost every way....they actually may have gifted them more points than SUU was able to score for themselves. I'm in no way putting Cal Play on a pedestal.....they are terrible this year but there is no way anybody looks at that game and says SUU dominated.kalm wrote:Yep. Re: Big Sky: Holy Crap!
You're right. Poly dominated in yardage and that game was still in question until the 4th quarter. But SUU did what they've done to everyone during this stretch which is force takeaways. They lead the nation in fact.CPAlum wrote:Huh? Cal Poly dominated SUU in almost every way....they actually may have gifted them more points than SUU was able to score for themselves. "Through that stretch" being the qualifier that you apparently missed.clenz wrote:except that time they played an MVFC schoolkalm wrote:

Re: Big Sky: Holy Crap!
Part of me still find it amusing that people still are doubting SUU, that's perfectly fine with me I enjoy being the underdog and continuing to win every week. Also the comment of "not playing anyone" makes zero sense especially with how the conference has shaped out. Arguably we are playing the top two teams in the conference back to back in these final two weeks. EWU has shown severe vulnerability on defense, Montana's offense has been very miss, Idaho State was not the team we expected this year and North Dakota has been all over the map in terms of wins and losses. In my opinion we've had a pretty decent Big Sky Conference schedule, definitely not as weak as people are making it out to be.

+10

And one more scenario of note, EWU wins out, SUU loses out and NAU wins out, Autobid and BSC champs goes to EWU!

I think that's the point... people are saying SUU hasn't played anybody particular strong in Big Sky play "to this point." The next two weeks however, may show how for real SUU is. With that said, good on them for winning the games on their schedule!SUUTbird wrote:Part of me still find it amusing that people still are doubting SUU, that's perfectly fine with me I enjoy being the underdog and continuing to win every week. Don't forget this finish.
After watching it several times, I am still convinced that Montana Griz player #18 had possession of the ball and had his right knee down on the ground prior to tossing the ball to his team mate, making him down by contact.
Look very closely at 13 seconds. Griz player has the ball and a right knee on the ground. He should have been called down.

Re: Big Sky: Holy Crap!
Possession rules are tighter than that. Apparently things were changed in recent years to make it more like a catch. Not to mention that the ball was bouncing/bobbling the whole time so I don't think he had possession even with looser rules.Wildcat Ryan wrote:

That youtube video doesn't have it, but the ensuing slow-mo replay also showed that Nelson didn't really "toss" the ball up—it actually rolled up & off his arm.

Even then though it doesn't make much sense, why I mentioned how the conference has shaped out this season. We played UNC who almost beat EWU and then beat PSU, Weber State who beat Montana in Missoula and almost beat EWU ect.
