They're called mountains, Flaggy. They attract clouds.

It's where the Cascade rain shadow ends, I think.

It's also why all the white supremacists like it. They don't have to worry about their shaved domes getting roasted.

Not the same attraction in Colorado, Utah, and Boone.

Boone? :?

And while the Pacific moisture is diminished, you still get the same affect further inland.

Adiabatic Lapse Rate...for you West Coast puzzled folks.

In other words...on one side of the mountain, the side that faces the prevailing winds, as the air comes in from the Pack-a-fick Ocean, the air is forced against the mountains...and with no other place to go, it rises. As the air rises, it cools. As it cools, it can hold less moisture, and clouds will form, and then precipitation will fall.

As the air passes over the mountain, it falls and it warms. The warm air can hold more moisture, but some of the moisture has been wrung out, so the humidity also falls. Thus, on the other side of the mountain, you can have a warmer, drier, climate.

If you go around the world, you can see some absolutely amazing examples of the adiabatic lapse rate in nature. In the Canary Islands, on Tenerife, the mountain has a moist tropical jungle on the eastern side, but a very dry dessert on the western side. Spectacularly contrasting views as you cross the climate zones while taking the switch backs up the mountain.

You're welcome. :thumb:

I used to have to convoy from Yuma AZ to San Diego on occasion. You want a difference in climate? Leave Yuma at 0600 with temps at 80 and rapidly rising. Pull into San Diego with a cloudy June gloom going on and 68 degrees midday. Get back to Yuma at 1600 with temps at 105+.

Well thank you Professor Fancy Pants!

I didn't realize what was happening when I watched all those puffy cumulus clouds from the Columbia Basin go sailing by and then turn angry when they hit the mountains of N. Idaho and sometimes even back up over us.

Or that the Missoula side was drier than the Couer d ' Alene side.

Second, what are you relating the word "same" to as a response as to why Colorado and Utah do not have the same effect?

They still have trees?

Didn't everything get eaten by bark beetles, moths, fire, or beavers? :suspicious:

Science is our friend.

The US is a wonderful place to study weather. Our geography/topography is unique and the results are amazing. :thumb:

Maybe you need to visit Boone if you think it doesn't attract clouds. It's where people go to train for living in Seattle. 8-)

Speaking of the peaceful Northwest...

http://www.rawstory.com/2015/12/family- ... l-college/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Warsame’s family claims the Somali boy was brutally beaten and then shoved off the roof by other students at Seattle Central College — and social media users have been urging police to investigate his death as a hate crime."

C'mon, Chizz...you are letting your community fall apart right before you eyes.

Are you saying that the Spokraine area has trees and Colorado and Utah do not, and that's why the map looks like that?

But, seriously, I asked what's going on to the north of Spokraine. You said "mountains". I asked why Colorado and Utah do not have the same climate? You said "mountains". Geesh.
I'll assume it has something to do with the climate differences to the west of those locations.
