As I understand it here in SC, they do a background check but never tie the gun itself to you, i.e. it gets stolen and used in a crime you aren't on the hook. I agree it's none of the governments' business how many I own, and I doubt they could know anyway. I have two handguns, but I've cycled through and traded probably 7-8 in order to settle on these I currently own.

Not to be all spandos, but I could see the government limiting an individual's ability to buy with a "mental health" screen, i.e. if you ever had a scrip for antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds in your past you could be disqualified.

Agree, but IF the government really wanted to stem the continued purchase of handguns I could see this as one avenue given a clean criminal background check.

My biggest take away was that he had the wrong ideas about what's being referenced when he talked about things like the right to worship freely and said that right was taken away by something like the church shooting. The rights expressed in our Declaration of Independence and in our Constitution are rights with respect to government. They have to do with limiting the power of government. When he started acting as though limiting the right to keep and bear arms should be done to protect other rights he was totally perverting the point.

The EO does not close the so-called "gun show loophole". The GSL is a misnomer. What they really mean is when an FFL, or somebody "in the business" to use the latest buzz language, might circumvent the required background check by misrepresenting themselves as a private seller or even light hobbyist who might be selling just a couple of guns just this one time at this particular show. They would then be a private seller and not required to do the check, just like any private seller is not required to do a check. The only requirement of a private seller is to not sell if they know or have reasonable suspicion that the buyer is prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms.

This new EO does nothing to prevent private sales at gun shows, other than attempting to prevent FFLs from posing as private sellers.

Note: Those who are unfamiliar with gun shows might believe that FFL fraud (posing as a private seller) is rampant. In reality, most gun shows are crawling with BATF. They do case the shows and would pretty quickly ID a fraudster. Hell, many shows I've attended, BATF has rented a table. I stop and chit chat with 'em. They're nice people.

East Coast gun shows are pretty tame. The largest gun shows I ever attended were in Arizona in the mid 90s. They were quite interesting. BATF hate was at an all time high due to Ruby Ridge and Waco and the then-recent implementation of the Brady Bill and Assault Weapons Ban. Furthermore, Timothy McVeigh blew up the OKC federal building and he had ties to Arizona.

Let me tell you, there were plenty of private sales going on at those gun shows, including out in the parking lots or in nearby hotels and such. You had people coming to Arizona from California by the thousands and everyone was fired up after Brady and AWB. People were paying insane money for grandfathered high cap mags and evil black rifles. I remember seeing 15 and 17 round Glock mags going for $100! Norinco AKs going for anywhere from $3k-$6k. It was complete insanity.

I'm kind of thinking of getting another one, something smaller than my other two (which are compact) that are more comfortable to carry. My CZ P07 Duty 9mm is double stack and painful in the small of my back, and I'm not likely to carry my Kimber around. I'm thinking a pocket 9mm but haven't decided on what just yet.

I'll be in the minority here but I give Obama a lot of credit on this & going it alone or doing what he can by executive action. Will what happened today prevent the all-too-common massacres that we now see? Sure it won't. However, there's no way to definitively say either way that it might prevent some, or just one.

The definition of insanity is just repeating failure over & over and expecting a different outcome. The zealots that hide/stand behind the 2nd Amendment & don't want to change a thing and tell you that there is zero that can be done are kidding themselves.

Forget the nonsense that this is a first step & the government is coming to take your guns - that's never going to happen. Just look at today for what it is, you can't tell me it's a bad thing. It would have been better if it would've been brokered in Congress sure, but this is 2016, what is newly brokered in Congress that both parties agree on any issue nowadays? Virtually nothing.
