Stocks
Re: Stocks
I'm getting killed. Lost $450-500 since the new year...but stocks are a long-term thing anyways. As we mostly know, this isn't the first or last time portfolios are hit with short-term losses.

Stabilizing the Fed??? What steps did Obama take to do that?dbackjon wrote:Not being GOPBaldy wrote: What Obama policies made the DOW skyrocket past 18,000?![]()
Stabilizing the Fed, stabilizing the Government, not having a reckless cowboy wasting trillions on a war built on lies,
As for the DOW skyrocketing, the biggest drivers had been continued growth in places like China, rock bottom interest rates from the Fed, and the oil boom (again, thank you fracking). Ironically, the current hiccups in the market are due to China stumbling, interest rates moving up, and the glut of oil in the world now. Darn cycles.

I'm not sure if you said earlier, do you have an online trading account? How do you buy and sell?

Some people see it as a loss, others see it as a buying opportunity.

My dad is so pissed right now because he has to begin withdrawing his 401(k) in February.

We were talking about the worst president before Obama while diving past Moses Lake yesterday. The wife asked about the city's history and I talked about the New Deal Grand Coulee Dam and Columbia Basin Reclamation projects which created the lake and Pot Holes reservoir and turned the desert into one of the most fertile ag areas in the world (not mention the cheap hydro power). Later, they would build an Airforce Base in Moses Lake to fight the Russkies and that commie, Ike, would build a freeway through the town.

Unemployment rate reported at 5.0%. It's more like 7.6%
The number of new jobs in the 24-54 age range was minimal. Most were <24 and >54 which smells like part time/temporary jobs.

Wait, we're still droning the hell out of everybody, still have a presence in Afghanistan, did the hokey pokey by stepping out of Iraq and back in. I think that's still at least billions being spent if not more. Oh, and more US casualties in Afghanistan since 2008 vs. the prior administration.

http://www.politifact.com/virginia/stat ... ma-polici/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; But Scott’s statements go beyond saying the president’s policies have merely contributed to today’s low gas prices. The congressman said the policies "have resulted in gas prices being reduced to lows not seen in years." That gives all credit to Obama.
We spoke to two oil analysts and they both took issue with Scott’s claim.
"I would challenge any politician who is saying the recent six-month downturn in gas prices has anything to do with a politician (Obama) who has been in office for several years, who has witnessed a sustained period of high prices," said Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, which tracks U.S. gas prices.
Government actions typically have little impact on the fluctuation of gas prices, he said.
DeHaan credits the increased domestic oil production to decisions by oil companies to invest profits banked just before Obama took office in tapping shale oil deposits in North Dakota and elsewhere.
The main factor in the recent price drop, DeHaan said, is a decision by OPEC countries not to cut production to drive up oil demand. OPEC believes the declining prices, left unabated, will make the production of shale oil unprofitable.
Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service, told us neither Obama nor any elected official is responsible for the oil shale boom, which he attributes to other factors such as technological advances in tapping oil deposits.
"The oil shale boom took place while President Obama was in office, but the production increases had little to do with government policy (other than low interest rates from Fed governors)," Kloza wrote in an email.
Kloza, however, does give Obama credit for supporting tough fuel economy standards that he said has contributed to lower prices.
"Almost all of what has happened (up and down) for oil within the 2009-to-present period has occurred through capitalism," wrote Kloza. "The president can neither be blamed nor praised for most of the fluctuations."
