The Speedway has been completely renovated over the last two years. They reduced capacity to ~100k, made the seats wider, added new concourses to make it more like a stadium than bleachers, etc.

I can't wait to get back down there. It's been 8 years ago for me.

Daytona and Talladega are the two least intimate venues (other than the road courses) so get used to seeing a pack of 40 cars go by once every 45 seconds. Bring a legal cooler, sun block, and if you don't own them be sure to rent a headset and either a radio scanner or FanVision.

Also, the higher the seat the better, and recommend seats near start/finish line or exit of pit road.

I don't know how good or bad he will be this year but I'm jumping on the hometown bandwagon of Landon Cassill.

That's cool that you have a home state guy to root for. He's sort of with the Cleveland Browns of teams though with Front Row Motorsports. Hopefully he can latch on to one of the premier teams with a few years of success.

He went to high school in Cedar Rapids, which is connected to Marion.

He's a bid deal around here. Sports will lead off local news tonight with him and he'll get over half the sports coverage. He and Zach Johnson in the PGA both grew up in CR and are talked about daily

Dale Jr is done for the day. Just lost aero grip. Seen that with a lot of cars today. :ohno:

What a finish! Wow. Was pulling for Truex but Hamlin beat him by a bumper.

I was actually celebrating the Truex win. But then I realized that Hamlin won.
But Hamlin is a likable guy so I'm not completely bummed out.

Not happy with the race though. Not sure if I have seen a super speedway race where it was harder to pass than this one. I'm not anti-restrictor plate, but Jeez.

Kenseth ended finishing in 14th, lucky he saved it when he panicked and trying to block Hamlin and went up too high.

My dad was in the living room watching the race (i.e. had it on while doing other stuff), I was out there for the last lap, swore Truex had the momentum but Hamlin pulled off the side draft and edged him out.

Ironically, and IIRC Hamlin was one of the few drivers they directly interviewed on the TV broadcast before the race. :chair:

That's a great point. Truex is pretty much a local and considers Dover his home track. He's supposedly a huge Flyers fan. His father also owns Sea Watch, which has a large clam plant in my hometown of Milford DE. The Truex family really does have roots in the area. Would have loved to see Truex latch on with Hendrick, but Furniture Row is doing well regardless. Furniture Row amazes me honestly. Every other shop is in North Carolina and their garage is in Denver. That's wild.
Moves from Chevy & an RCR alliance to Toyota and a JGR alliance. Big upheaval, but in the long run definitely a step forward..
Nevermind the long run. With a backup car came from the back half of the field and ran up front with the JGR cars for most of the race and came within a hair of winning.

Damn the 4 JGR + quasi JGR Truex dominated most of the race.

4 Big offseason changes:

-Biggest the new charter system

-The new lower downforce package at 32 of 36 races, all but the 2 Superspeedways, so we'll see it in action next week at Atlanta Should mean a little less on car aero and a little more on driver skill.

-The new overtime system for a green/white/checkered.

-Going from the old analog gauge displays dashboard to a new digital dashboard.
"....."The digital dash, they're going to have 16 customizable screens," Gene Stefanyshyn, NASCAR senior vice president, innovation and racing development, told the NASCAR Wire Service. "If the guy wants to put the RPM gauge off in the right corner, he can do it. If he wants to drag it into the middle of the display, he can do it. If he wants to make it huge, he can make it huge …

"They can do whatever they want to customize this. They can make it look like a traditional gauge or they can make it a bar graph. There are different color LEDs they can pick, different gauges they can pick."

Instead of seven or eight information choices, such as fuel pressure, water temperature, RPMs, etc., NASCAR plans to provide as many as 25 data options. That includes lap times, which traditionally have been communicated to drivers by their crew chiefs over the radio.....

....The customizable display available to drivers is the first phase of the implementation of the digital dash. The long-range plan is for NASCAR to use the dash to communicate information directly from the tower to the drivers.

"Phase Two, which we're working on, is the longer-term strategy of being able to send information from the tower into the car to make the officiating process instantaneous," Stefanyshyn said. "We couldn't do Phase Two if we just had normal gauges. That's why the digital dash is an important part of that step.

"We can display the checkered. We can display a red flag. We can display a yellow. We can send the flags into the car. We'll be able to send in things like where they are on a restart. We're actually going to do a graphic to show where they line up. The other thing we can send into the car is penalties. When we get to Phase Two, we'll be doing freeze-the-field on a GPS basis versus the (scoring) loops. So we'll have a ton more accuracy."

Under that scenario, Stefanyshyn said, NASCAR could reduce the number of loops needed at the race track and use the loops as a backup to the more accurate GPS readings.

The digital dash can also provide engine diagnostic codes that will tell the driver, for instance, whether one of the sensors has failed. Accordingly, a crew chief can make an informed decision on whether to bring the car to the pits.

Ultimately, NASCAR could use the digital dash to provide information to fans or to record and transmit biometrics of drivers involved in accidents, both pending driver and team approval....."

Spandos says: Will NASCAR be able to enter a car's ECU through the new digital channel and throttle down a dominating car slightly to help hold the TV audience? :coffee:

I mean, I'm a fan of the most popular driver, so I really shouldn't be concerned. Might see Dale Jr get a curious hp boost late in critical races. :D

Damn, I missed it! They went 500 miles to only finish that close?

The wife and I once took two separate routes to the lake while promising to drive normal speeds. 17 miles and she had to wait for me to turn in!!! Can you believe that! It was THAT close!

I think NASCAR is going to have a good year this year.

The Daytona 500 finish is actually getting water cooler talk among non-NASCAR fans today. I'm eating lunch at the Dept of Ed cafeteria and listening to a table of old guys (clearly liberal DC fed lifers - I've listened in on these guys before) talk for about 20 minutes straight about the race. I am trying really hard not to jump in after some of the ludicrous/incorrect stuff they've said, but they clearly enjoyed the finish.

The other big boost this year is gas prices. A large portion of the fanbase at NASCAR's peak 15 years ago were RV'ing to races in motor homes or pulling a camper, often for 500+ miles. $4.50/gal gas killed that. Now that gas is a third of that, I think attendance will go up significantly.

They didn't retire 3 or 43. Why would they retire the next tier?
