Matt Kenseth gets an unscored lap for ignoring the black flag with white stripe. The black flag was for, IMHO, a very ticky-tack penalty for having the gas man lay the wedge adjustment wrench on the rear deck lid for the tire carrier to use when he came back around the car. This is technically illegal. Gas man can't do that while the gas can is engaged. Had he done it before engaging the gas can, it would have been legal.

Anyway, Kenseth goes two laps down from the drive-through penalty and the unscored lap. Methinks NASCAR is going to hound that team for what Kenseth did to Logano last year, deliberately wrecking a race leader while out of contention. :thumb:

Example of why I don'r like the new OT rule. Ran nearly the last lap and a half under caution. Under the old 3 attempts at a green/white/checkered since the caution came out nearly a 1/2 lap before the white flag that would have simply counted as the 1st attempt and they would have lined up again. But under this new OT rule since the caution came out after the OT line on the half lap mark on the backstretch but well before the white flag that was the race..

We saw the new lower downforce package run twice last yr at Kentucky and Darlington (I was at Darlington). It was a big success last year as it made for better racing. Both of those were night races though. This time was the 1st time running it during the day. Even though only had 2 cautions before the caution at the end, the drivers seemed to like it. Without all the aero downforce the cars are harder to drive, and its easier for a trailing car to pass one ahead of it since won't be as much dirty air.

With the lower downforce Goodyear can go with a softer tire..
".......Recent years saw the cars put a tremendous amount of load on the tires, which created a higher risk for failure. And drivers making angry comments over tire blowouts or TV showing replays of crashes caused by flat tires are bad for Goodyear’s business.

So historically, Goodyear has erred on the side of durability to avoid negative headlines.

But at times, that has added to the lack of exciting racing. When tires don’t wear out during the course of a race, it means track position is more important because there’s not as much passing and not as much strategy.

Now that there’s less downforce, however, Goodyear has more flexibility to work with a softer tire compound......."
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/na ... /81034252/

Today with softer tire + Atlanta being the 2nd oldest track surface since the last repave in 1997 there was a lot of tire wear..

Today was a great day for Goodyear. Lots of tire wear, but little tire failure.

The low point for Goodyear was at Indy a few years back when tires were failing at 20 laps.

The lack of crashes was shocking to me. I've never seen so many cars bobbling with no other cars around them.

Yeah, that was unusual. At KY and Darlington last year it certainly wasn't the case. I think the race on Sun at ATL will be the exception under the new lower downforce- I'm sure we'll see more wrecks & cautions at most races.

Truex docked 15 points and crew chief Cole Pearn suspended one race for illegal roof flaps (propped up slightly) at Daytona.

Five other teams (3, 27, 31, 47 and 95) were docked 10 points for various violations, all at Atlanta.

32, 83, 88 :o and 98 teams all given written warnings for failing template inspection on multiple occassions.

Damn it..not good news on my 2nd favorite driver. :ohno: .although they should make the Chase with at least 1 win or if not easily on points despite the 15 point penalty...

At Atlanta. Pearn was already on probation because of the Daytona. Are appealing stating it is an issue of safety and they gained no competitive advantage.

No one mentioned the huge news from last Wed- Stewart Haas going from Chevy to Ford next year. SHR will leave their Hendrick alliance, who they receive engines and chassis from, and receive Roush-Yates engines and start building their own chassis.
http://www.foxsports.com/nascar/story/s ... 017-022416

You can expect information sharing between Hensrick and SHR teams to slow to a trickle..This year doesn't help neither team. I'm thinking thinking if it hurts one of them will be more Stewart Haas...

As a fan of a Hendrick driver, I'm not worried. SHR didn't benefit the Hendrick teams whatsoever, only vice versa. So what's there to worry about?

Now SHR gets to drain the Rousch Yates brain.

On your last point, the Hendrick Motorsports manager already gave an interview in the prerace last Sunday where he said Hendrick will meet their contractual obligation the rest of this season, but information sharing is already over.

Yeah, I saw that interview with the HMS GM..

Radioactive Atlanta.
-Johnson ties Dale Earnhardt Sr with 76 career wins for 7th on all time career win list.
-Kyle Busch whines at the end as Jr is scored in 2nd ahead of Kyle..

2016 among the 36 charter teams:
19 chevys
10 fords
7 toyotas

2017
15 chevys
14 fords

If you include the 2 non charter full time teams of the Wood Brothers #21 Ford and H Scott Motorsports #46 Chevy you can add one ford and chevy.

Wow! Jr. moves from 26th to 5th in the first 50 laps. Got a fast car here in the early going at Phoenix.

EDIT: After a caution and great restart, up to 2nd at lap 60.

EDIT 2: Jr. takes the lead at lap 76.

Great, great finish at Phoenix. Harvick edges out Edwards in what looks to be an even closer finish (distance wise) than the Daytona 500. Edwards nudged Harvick in final turn and then they both slammed each other side to side as Edwards was trying to pass. Good stuff.

Jr., on old tires, slips from 2nd to 5th on overtime restart.

20/20 hindsight: should have came in on that last caution.
MEAC, last one out turn off the lights.
